Perth here we come!
This site has been a great source of information for us over the last few weeks. We were recently in Perth for a job interview (for my OH) which was successful and we are now awaiting our 457 visa. We are so excited and looking forward to joining all of you that are already in Perth. We hope to arrive July/August time. There's me, my hubby and our little boy who's 18 months. There will be lots of questions we will be sending your way I'm sure but just wanted to officially say hi now we've joined up!

Re: Perth here we come!
Hi there and welcome to the site. We too are hoping to go to Perth and keeping everything crossed. What does your OH do? Good luck with everything and don't be afraid to ask anything, plenty people on here with all the knowledge.

Re: Perth here we come!
thanks Nikki, Dave's a Supply Chain Manager. Have you been out to Perth before? When are you aiming to make the move?
|
Re: Perth here we come!
No, we are one of the mad one's who have never been to Australia before but we look at it as an adventure and would rather regret something we have done than something we haven't! How long are you planning on staying there or are you hoping to get a PR visa once you are out there? We are hoping to get our visas about July/August time and hopefully move out there not too long after that.

Re: Perth here we come!
Could not agree with you more. Some things are just worth trying; you can at least say you've given it a go rather than wishing you had! We are going on the 457 Visa which is being sponsored by the employer. The job contract is initially 3 years and yes our quest is for permanent residency. We fell in love with OZ when we visited the East coast a couple of years ago and even more so when we went to Perth. Are you going down the permanent visa route / MODL etc? Do you know people in Perth / ideas on which part you're going to

Re: Perth here we come!
Yep, we are going down the permanent route. OH is a brickie and is on the MODL. We know no-one in Perth and all the family and friends here think we are mad as we are always doing something or going somewhere and think we are going to be back in 6 months, but we will make friends out there I am sure and people will visit. We are thinking of settling down Mandhura way, but if I am entireley honest, it is only because that is where most people talk about, I haven't really heard of any brickies in the North of Perth! Send me a pm and tell me all about Perth and what you thought of it when you were out there.

Hi. We are heading to Mandurah, just a soon as the house is sold. It a beautiful place about 80km south of Perth. The new railway link to the city is planned for July (hopefully) and this will take 45 mins. Mandurah has alot to offer but if you havent been there then I would recommend having a look at North of the river too. Both are lovely and some of the suburbs northside are more developped. I would recommend popping to the Thursday meeting at 12.30 hrs every Thursday at Hillarys (northside) and meeting all the lovely people. They are knowledgeable and friendly and very welcoming. If OH is a brickie then he wont struggle with work north or south. If you are looking for being closer to the city for commuting then north may be worth considering. When we 1st came on to this site North was the "in" place and Mandurah was just a retirement holiday place but that has all changed. People looked at us a little strangely when we said we were going to Mandurah (and that was just 2 yrs ago!!) Mandurah is still being developped and has lovely restaurants, marina, dolphins. Feel free to pm me anytime Watty'n'Arls :) :) |

We would love to go to our first Thursday meeting - where at Hillary's does everyone meet? Is it in a certain bar? Would they mind if we tagged along? We have never been to australia also. My hubby is a bricky too. Laura |

Re: Perth here we come!
Hi Gordon & Laura
Sorry for the late reply, just signed in. Hillary's meet is an open house and definitely not clicky. As someone else has put it is at Hillary Boat Harbour at 12noon, you cant miss the group as there is an Oz flag and a Tigger on the table and the group is big (although we did!!!). They were lovely and welcoming and so friendly. One of the women there set up an information guide for expats at Joondalup library and by all accounts is very good (she won an award for it). Everyone welcomed us and one of the group invited us to a barbie on 1st meet. OH will have no problem with work NOR or SOR it is one big mass of development. If you have kids then it is no problem too. Good luck and hope it goes well. watty'n'arls :) |

Just realised - I think I've been on this computer all day - how sad is that!!!! Laura:p |

Re: Perth here we come!
I know what you mean, we go through phases of thinking 'this can' be true, it doesn't feel real' and then think 'oh my god, we should be there in a few months!' to be honest though we are really excited and can't wait to arrive :) :)

Re: Perth here we come!
So far its great.
Got a nice rental in Connolly nor - my advice, check out the private ones, we found less people fighting for them! My husband soon found a job with a resonable starting wage. I suppose I should start looking!!! Just need to start getting out to meet some folks now. Hope to go to Hillarys next Thursday. Where are you heading? Leeane |

The only reason we picked the place was because all the I.T. jobs are in Perth and my sister lived in Bunbury, and it seemed ideally situated between the two. With all these brickies moving to Mandurah, I hope I can find someone to build my new extension - any jobless brickies out there, contact me! Just waiting for the shire to approve, then we can get started. In answer to another person's question, yes people from this site do get-together. We have met up with fellow expats from this board a few times. There is a weekly Wednesday morning meet at the Mandurah Dome cafe that OHippy organises, I haven't been yet but keep meaning to. Have been in Mandurah now for nearly 5 years, any questions, feel free to PM me. |
