Perth - Help With Secondary School Places
We are due to move South of the River in Perth in the next few months. We understand that the allocation of school places at public schools are generally based on the catchment area. So for a public school place this will very much depend on where we can afford to rent.
However, as we may not be able to afford to rent in those areas with better public schools is anyone aware of any good SoR public secondary schools that may take out of catchment area students.
In addition, we have also got his name down on a waiting list at a couple of private schools, however currently there aren't any places. Again does anyone know of any SoR private schools that may have any places.
My son is due to go into Year 8 in 2014.
Thanks.

Re: Perth - Help With Secondary School Places
At the moment due to the fact Year 7 students start high school in 2015 the WA Department of Education have told all High Schools NOT to accept any out of boundary applications. For instance our catchment school currently has 750 students and will swell to 1100 once year 7 starts in 2015. Sadly if you want a decent school you will have to live in a decent area.

Do you "pray the right way?" there are relatively good state catholic schools which offer a private style education with minimal fees....
If not, there are private schools with spaces a little further south...

Thanks for the information.
Just wondered if you are able to provide me with the names of the schools you have mentioned that have places.
Thanks.

The term South of the River, covers a huge area, can you narrow it down a bit? Also take into account where you are likely to be working.

My son goes to Settlers Primary School, which is a public school, next door but we are seriously thinking of sending him to Tranby from Year 7 - if we can get him in.

Re #3 You don't have to "pray the right way"...Catholic schools must take a % of students not of their faith to receive Government funding.
IMO find a house to rent then worry about the school. Unfortunately whilst the rental market is slowly offering up more vacancies, you still cannot afford to pick and choose very much. You could set your heart on a school and not be able to find a decent rental in the catchment area.
