Also said Perth is isolated from the rest of Oz/world only the city ,Freemantle and the coastal areas there of note though he didnt see a great deal of the suburbs ( his own opinion of course).

Putting a dampener on my move this, any useful thoughts ? if your there and it's a lot more positive than this please tell me.

Hi Dave, we have short term holiday rentals in Rockingham, South of Perth. If you are looking at coming over have a look at our web page http://members.westnet.com.au/cedarcottage/ My husband emigrated from UK 19 years ago and only went back last year to show myself and the children his homeland. For him it was a fantastic experiencing the UK from our prospective. I loved the history, as you know that is something we do lack in this country(not just Perth), so I think people should see as much as they can no matter where they go. Suzette.

It's in Winton Road, Joondalup.

[QUOTE=samnrob2]Both seem a little touchy!

All I'll say is that I can't fly to Sydney, Melbourne or Cairns within two hours from Perth. I can / have done from Brisbane. I was at a conference in Sydney with a girl from Perth and she was bemoaning the five hour flight to get there.

To me, that seems too detached from other major cities in Oz. Especially when you consider so many national events take place on the East Coast (I'm thinking primarily sporting events (Australian Open Tennis, Melbourne Cup, etc).

Especially coming from the UK, where you can get a choice of cities within half an hour's drive or so. And getting from London to Glasgow? You can fly there within the hour! (Although I beg the question why you'd want to go to Glasgow )

Not touchy Rob, just frustrated by the ignorance. The east coast is bloody beautiful mate, and I'm sure you're in a lovely area.

The flight thing is bu!!shit though buddy. If you have to travel to an airport and go through the rigmorale of boarding a plane to Sydney or Melbourne, then you're 'isolated' from these cities in the same context. The fact that Perth is an extra hour and a half or so is negligible.

p.s. If the bird's flight was 5 hours, her plane was either head on into a typhoon, or she forgot about the time difference!! We've made the trip three times, and every time it was around the 3 1/2 hour mark.

Many people come here without a reccie and get on fine.

In terms of the isolation your friend mentioned, yes Perth holds the title of "The world most geographically isolated city with a population of more than 1 million" and the distance between Perth and Sydney or even Broome or Albany is greater than the distance between Oldham and London or even Paris, but do you really go to London & Paris every other weekend or is it special occasions and Holidays only ?

Do you and your family go out and about exploring the countryside and Alton Towers every weekend or are you like most families in that you do those kind of things when you have visitors but otherwise stay pretty much at home, socialising with friends and family, doing the weekly shop at Asda and Sunday trawl round B&Q ?

When you live your day to day lives I dont think it matters where you live to a degree - well yes you do have days out etc and holidays but not every day and it does come down to money as well I feel. If you are the type of family that needs to be entertained by theme parks etc then maybe Perth is too 'isolated' and the gold coast or sydney might be better.

One thing to consider is job opportunities ? What line of work are you both in ? Are there good prospects in Perth or is East Coast better ? Also remember Perth wages are about 10-15 % lower than East Coast wages on average (unless you are in mining) but also remember house prices are about 30-40% lower so if you have a mortgage, Perth is more affordable (If you’re bringing wads of cash over and living mortgage free then wages are less an factor in the equation).

Kids adapt and are bored wherever you live, but there are clubs etc out here and I should imagine if they have a good group of friends it doesnt matter if they live in Perth or Brisbane, things would be exactly the same for them.

Isolation can mean many things but for me I felt terribly isolated when I lived in France, cos initially I didn’t speak French. Also initially in Milan although by the end of it I missed Milan terribly but I could speak the lingo and had made a few good friends (still one of my fav places in the world).

Isolation to me is about not having a good network of friends (also family), having no-one to talk with, laugh with, moan with, cry with and there are many people who feel isolated on east coast or west coast, north or south and would also feel isolated if they stayed in the UK and moved up to Scotland for example ?

On the geographical point, How many people in the UK complaining about the isolation of Perth have driven the few hundred miles from London up to the lake district for a long weekend ? a few percentage points at most I would guess, most are more likely to get a cheap Ryan Air flight to Amsterdam or somewhere.

How many have driven or flown up to the far northern highlands ? even fewer I would guess !!!

A lot (most?) people in the UK are not used to looking on their own doorstep or driving a few hundred miles let alone a few thousand, so the Australian distances seem vast to them. But what they haven’t seemed to realise is that most Australians aren't whizzing about the country from side to side either.

Most Australians are living the same standard boring lives of jobs, housework, shopping, washing the car etc. that people the world over live.

If you dont go out and about exploring on a regular basis in the UK, what makes you think you are going to be any more inclined to do it in Perth ? or Brisbane ? or wherever ?

It amazes me the number of people who think that by moving to Australia they are suddenly going to change and be more active and take more day trips etc. Is it a weather thing ? Cos if it is stop right now the weather wont change you from a stay-at-home person to an 'active' person. And if you dont take trips and get out and about in the UK when you have so to speak "more" on your doorstep (europe etc) and are earning more money than you will earn in Australia, what makes you think you will be doing it in Australia on either coast ?

Anyway just in case you will be whizzing about, flights from Perth to Sydney and Brisbane can be got for under A$400, which is cheaper than the GBP200 it would cost you to go to Greece, Turkey, Spain, Norway or most places not on the RyanAir / EasyJet travel schedules. And for about the same price as a flight to Sydney you can get a flight to Bali or Thailand or Singapore.

Perth may be the worlds most isolated city geographically, but there are many other cities that are actually more isolated than Perth in terms of activities and ability to travel outside the area (weather, politics, infrastructure et al. )

Anyway shutting up now. Good luck whatever you do !!

Great post Vege Kids-you talk a lot of sense-puts everything into perspective

Hi steve,

just went to the NEXT store in Joondalup, very excited as I loved the shop in the uk!! Sad I know, but was really dissapointed when i got there, it is full of the UK's rejected sale items, you can tell this as it has the red dot on the label!! All the sizes were either too large or too small, although I have heard that they will be getting better stock in soon.. so I will go back again!!

Ditto! They even had stuff for sale that I already owned! I'd bought it before I came here and we've been here 15 months!

Gawd!

Mind you, who gives a stuff, nobody bloody cares what you look like over here!
Anyway, summers on it's way, out come the shorts, singlets and thongs!

Iwould like to say, I lived in Perth for four years with my first husband and three children. I loved it, we had not visited it before and the reason I cmae back to the UK was that my marriage broke down. I came back with three children to bring up alone. This done I have now married again and am heading back there as soon as our house sells. Only one of my children is coming with me, but I believe that it is the best place in the world. I have been back three times with my second husband and he loves it too. I think that if you have a stable marriage and are happy together you will be happy in Perth. It is isolated but I think that is an advantage, slower pace of life and the children are able to remain children longer, less negative outside influences to deal with. You soon become aclimatised to the heat and will find that winter over there, although not as cold as here, begins to feel as cold. It was the wide open spaces I enjoyed and the beautiful blue sky, waking up every day to sunshine. Also the ocean is beautiful any time of day or night, to me Perth is HOME. Good luck on your move, and dont worry if you change your mind its not the end of the world. The world is your oyster! Grab life by the scruff of the neck and enjoy it. ElaineXXX

ask yourself just how far in any direction did you travel whlie in the uk , day in day out year in year out for me it was not very far so living in western oz will do for me you wont be living on a postage stamp like the uk western oz alone is about 12 times bigger than the uk

Hi, i see you are bringing one child with you, I came over with 3 of mine, the youngest three, my older 3 stayed in Uk , they are to my first husband, but they dont have any contact, my hubby has brought them up, we have been here 10 months. My daughter could have gone on visa but did not want to, then 6 months down the line she wanted to be with us, so i got here here on student visa. I find it really difficult being away from them ,it is almost like grieving. I just wondered how you will cope , or do the others plan to follow. Denise

That's it ... we were giving serious consideration to Perth to the point we have a rental on hold but if Next are selling hooky gear in Joondaluppy ... that's the final straw.

Anyone know any websites with cheap flights to Brisbane ?

Hi Denise, the child I am bringing with me is 24 years old!!! I am leaving behind my daughter 28, who is pregnant with her 2nd child, my grandaughter aged 4 and my son aged 27. I think that I am going to miss them terribly, but they have their own lives now. I will live in hope that one day they will follow.I hope to keep in touch with you to see how you are going. Maybe you could contact them on the E-mail to stay in touch. We are getting web cams so we can see each other. Got to go to work now, but chin up as they say, life is much stranger than fiction, anything can happen. ElaineXXX

Unfortunately the phrase "Perth is isolated" is one of those phrases that people just say, without actually knowing what they are talking about or mean. Its like all these numpties who say, "ooooooooohh its all at the front, it must be a girl, or a boy, depending on who says it. How inclined to offer an opinion would these wassacks be, if there were ten options to choose from instead of two..................boy or girl.
Totally agree with this. It's 5 hours to Sydney ($400-600 return) or 5 hours to Singapore ($600-800 return). Same difference to me although I'd rather go to Singapore.
