Thanks for that, Rimsky, whereabouts are you in Perth?
We have been a few times and are looking to move out next year, we also have friends there too.
Glad to see a positive post on Perth, not the usual don't go there, go to the east coast...........have travelled all over so we feel that decision made on first hand info and wouldn't knock any other area as we all have different opinions and requirements.
For anyone looking for land and build, try http://www.brightontown.com.au/
we will prob buy an exist house, near to the beach, good site for that info is http://www.realestate.com.au

Hi all
We have just bought a plot of land and decided to build. The reason for this is, after doing our research to "FINISH" off the house is more than we expected BUT the cost of stamp duty for an existing house was much more. Remember when buying a house you will have to pay stamp duty on both land and house, when building only on the land. It worked out about the same difference is we will get the house we have chosen!!
Just our personal opinion though. Looked at Brighton area, nice enough but will have social housing which unfortunately WILL affect house prices and titles for land are taking a long long time to come out.
However LOVE Perth and came here for climate and because hated living in a big claustraphobic city with rubbish weather!!
Cheers

pps Just ignore people like 'Pommy Bastard' - actually don't ignore, just don't bother reading, he is probably an 'oker Australian' who doesn't want you guys to migrate here!

ALMOST 500,000 young Australians are at risk of long-term disadvantage because they are failing to bridge the gap between school and work successfully.
And, according to a report by independent research and policy development organisation the Dusseldorp Skills Forum, the plight of WA teenagers is worse that the national average.
The proportion of young West Australians aged 15 to 19 who were not in full-time education or full-time work in 2003 was 16.9 per cent, a better position than in 2001 and 2002 but worse than in 1999 and 2000.
This 16.9 per cent figure placed WA behind Victoria at 10.4 per cent, NSW at 15.1 per cent, and Tasmania at 15.8 per cent.
The Australian average was 14.9 per cent.
Across Australia, 23 per cent of young adults aged 20 to 24 were neither studying nor working.

Everyone who emigrates feels like you are feeling, it is a huge step to take but a very exciting one.
My husband and I first moved to Perth in 1987 and from day 1 I was very homesick. We had our first child here but returned to the uk in 1991. After 11 years (and lots of good times with both family and friends) we returned here in Feb this year.
So you are asking why did we come back? Well the answer is lifestyle; we now have 3 children and life offers them so much more over here, they play tennis, they are going to learn to surf, we have the ocean on our doorstep, they can do simple things that are fun and don't cost a fortune!
We have been able to afford a very large house (in comparison to what we had in the UK) with a much smaller mortgage. We are currently in the process of putting in a pool.
The wages are less over here but it doesn't cost as much to live.
We would have like to have build but it is now getting difficult to buy a decent size block of land (above 650sq metres). What you have to consider when you build is what it costs to finish the house of (as lots of things are not included in the price - i.e painting, airconditioning, floor tiles, carpets, fencing, lawns, reticulation etc).
Hope this info helps - Good luck

Number 1 - know its not beachside, we are actually look at Mindarie or Quinns, any advice on those!?
Number 2 - doesn't mean they are bad people does it, so are we knocking people from council houses now?
As for dreaming, we have both spent time living and working in oz so we know what its like, arrived back from last trip in March where we decided on Perth, each to their own and not knocking you for your choice of abode back here.
