Default Perth - Cycling to Work

Any cyclists out there who commute to Perth City Centre? I currently cycle to work every day in the UK as it's only 8 miles each way and the route is virtually all off road and country lanes. If we move to Perth I'd be looking at Suburbs that have easy cycle access to the City - would be looking at Duncraig and surrounding areas - seem to remember a cycleway/pathway down the coast from the Northern Suburbs the last time I was there.

Any Links to websites or personal experience would be useful.

When we lived in Sorrento my husband regularly cycled. He rode all the way down the coast towards City Beach and then inland from there and through Subi to the City. Quite an easy run once you dodge all the tarts walking and chin wagging with their mates (his words not mine )

This is what makes it worthwhile! (Mind you I've had a few near-accidents whilst being distracted)

Cheers Northernbird - good link that - sounds like a good ride into the City - from the maps there appears to be some sort of Cycleway that follows the Northern Train Line - although quicker it's probably not as scenic as the coastal route. The coastal route Cyclepath seems to start at Scarborough and finish at Swanbourne. Good to hear from someone whos husband has first hand knowledge of doing it!

My husband cycles daily to Northbridge from our house. Its a 20 k cycle .Mind you he always heads straight to the fridge for a beer when he comes home.It helps to keep him fit ,mind you hes had a few near mishaps. He seems to enjoy it.x

Which Suburb are you in Irishbloo? I suppose maximum I'd be looking at cycling would be 25K out from the City (Company I'm looking to work for are on St Georges Terrace). Probably looking at Duncraig or surrounding suburbs but depends on Schools also.

Half of the team I work with cycle to work. They come from all directions and there are good cyclepath networks (albeit shared with pedestrians) all over the place. We are nearly 40km out so too far for me to cycle, oh, and I am too lazy too.

Which way does the Freemantle Doctor blow? From South to North, North to South or West to East - I want it behind me on the way home!

slightly off topic...a few relatives of mine have told me that bikes are very expensive out there and it'll be better to buy one from here and ship it across, is that true?

If you live in Freo and work in the city it will probably be against you both ways!

I cycle to work on most days from the northern suburbs towards the city.

Normally you get calm in the morning and a south westerly sea breeze in the afternoon which helps. Having said that, this doesn't always work out!

Hubby does road racing on his bikes and called in a couple of bike shops during our reccie to look at timetrial bikes, they advised buying before we came over which I though very honest! Mind you these are more specialist types of bikes. Looked to be very good cycling lanes most places in/around Perth that we saw.

Luckily I've just bought a new bike (Hybrid) so I'll bring it over with me - the Company are paying relocation expenses so cost of the container is not an issue . Better pack the wife and kids bikes too. Don't know if you can order via www.wiggle.co.uk and pay the shipping to get them over there as they are very cheap for what you get on that site.
