Perth Arrival
Hi Guys,
We are Dave & Mel from Scunthorpe, we are emigrating to Perth and will be arriving July 10th 2003. Booked a week in Ibis Hotel whilst we look for rental accommodation/car etc, any advice as to suitable areas would be appreciated, we have been told the following areas are OK Duncraig, Greenwood, Warwick, Hamersley and Kingsley. We are looking for somewhere with easy access to beach and CBD. Any advice on best way to transfer currency (at best rates) would be welcomed. Cheers Mel&Dave |
Re: Perth Arrival
Had long conversation with Johnny at Halewood about currency process. Seemed easy enough and a few cents below trading rate. Definitely not tourist rates! They don't deal in real cash though so you'll still need some in cash.

Hi,
We are arriving on the 14th of July. I am not sure whether you have kids or not, or your age group, but try scarborough, for a reasonably priced beach suburb, close to cbd. If you've got kids, then pick a suburb by the school...... I can't remember the name of the best car hire place just now, but when I do, I'llattach it to this thread. It offers the best deals. Nicci |
Scarborough? Reasonable? Dont make me squeak.....

thanx

Nicci weve looked at Scarboro but its too expensive for the type of property were after (4 bed/2 bath/pool) Im 34 and Mels 32 (no kids) just need to be within 30 mins of CBD for work. Cheers Dave |
Hi Mel and Dave,
My wife and I both grew up in Barton on Humber. Been gone a few years now, but still get up there to visit relatives. We spent many a drunken night in Henry Africa’s. Is that place still open? We are off to Perth in November to validate our visas. If you don't mind me asking what line of work are you in? Regards Karl. |

We are hoping to be out to perth on 11th October. Good luck. |
Hi Dave & Mel
We are off to Perth in Aug 03. We've Been told that land and property south of Perth is a lot cheaper more established. North of Perth is more modern, but more expensive. Our friends stayed in Yokine, which was close to the beach, probably need a car. I agree Halewood in Windsor is sound for money changing. They were recommended by one of the top financial advisors at Godfrey and Pembroke. Who are you flying with? costs? All the best. Dave & Mandie. |

Regards Karl. Went through Barton on way to Barrow yesterday to visit Scooby (Due out in Perth Oct 2003). Henry Afrikas still open, though dont get in much as I feel a bit of an old fart (most people 16 - 20). I'm told that you still stick to the Carpet! Im in Engineering (Mechanical - Project Management) and my wife (Mel) is in accounts. Can't wait to get to Perth as its just started wazzing it down here! winter in perth must be better than our summer! Keep in Touch Dave |
Hi Dave & Mel
For car hire check out Bayswater or Euro Cars. For accounting jobs you're likely to be city based and for mechanical engineering it is more likely to be city or south. The suburbs you mentioned are all northern ones. Zebra4 |
Re: Perth Arrival
Hi Dave & Mel
We are hoping to emigrate to Perth next year "fingers crossed" We have family in Kinross,North Perth they have lived there for approx 5yrs. They love it . We have been quizzing them on different places and they suggest that the best thing to do is get out there and have a good look around. Woodvale,Duncraig,Currambine,Carramar and Kingsley are all supposed to be nice areas. Hillarys and Mindarie also look nice but as they are nearer the beach property prices are a bit steeper We have been looking at property guides which we have been sent and when you suddenly see house prices considerably more cheaper than others it speaks for itself. As for car rental we have seen Bayswater car rental mentioned on another forum supposedly very cheap. Good luck for your future life in OZ. Don't forget when you get out there and find somewhere that you like don't forget to give us some feedback by posting a message on the forum Diane& Jeff Originally posted by mel&dave Hi Guys, We are Dave & Mel from Scunthorpe, we are emigrating to Perth and will be arriving July 10th 2003. Re: Perth Arrival
Hi both,
We are due to leave for Perth in July, and are looking to go north of the city due to the fantastic beaches (we have 3 young kids). As long as you are close to the Mitchell freeway you can get a long way in 1/2 an hour (not the gridlock we are used to) Lots of new developments going up North of Hillarys, good size housing for lot's less than we pay here. Money transfers: we have just opened a bank account in Perth and will be transfering bank to bank (for £10 fee) which gives better 'Priority Transfer' rates than you see as tourist rates. Good luck with your move, are you both excited, as my lot certainly are as it's a great place. Andy |

Humberside (or North Lincs as it is now) must breed us migrant types:) :) Good to hear Henry Africa's is still on the go. Sounds like we are in the same line of work. I'm a planning engineer working for one of the oil companies. I did a lot of work on the refineries on Humber bank when I lived up there. Have you got sorted out with a job in Perth? I've got a number of contact details for agents. If you want to send me a PM I’ll send them across to you. All the best Karl. |
Re: Perth Arrival
Hi Dave and Mel
Lucky you, we are hoping to go Oct/Nov 2003. Somebody gave me a web address the other day , thought it might come in handy- www.pomsinperth.com apparantly they are 2 family's who have done the immigration bit to Perth in 2000 and they now own 3/4 houses just north of city centre, which they rent out fully kitted out for people like us awaiting our household stuff!!! they also pick you up from the airport. They decided to set this up because they got so ripped off themselves when arriving and did not know anyone to help with info etc.. so free advice as well, I've looked at their web site and I would certainly give them a go,they may even be able to help you in the suburbs question. Hope all goes well, Happy travelling. Suz |

Warwick is a nice suburb, i stopped there in a b&b and it was close to a supermarket, post office, cinemas and other shops. its not to far away from the beach or the highway to the cbd. it also has a train station near by to.

We had a good look around the show homes in Currambine - different from here in UK as a number of different builders have show homes next to each other rather that one volume housebuilder, so you can easily walk from house to house and compare. I understand that most of the land blocks are gone in these areas if you were intending building your own. A new area of land release is planned at a new suburb called Somerlie. As far as I am aware the Mitchell Freeway and rail line will be extended north beyond Joondalup so this suburb will also be very handy for the CBD. I have a web link explaining this if anyone is interested? As you say Mindarie and Hilarys are very nice but more pricey. Nothing like sitting outside in the pub at Hilarys in the sun watching the world go by!! Cheers Martin |

HI,, MY SISTER AND HER HUBBY HAVE JUST LEFT AND ARRIVED IN PERTH YESTERDAY. THEY HAVE ARRANGED CAR HIRE AND HAVE AN APARTMENT, THEY ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR SOMETHING A LITTLE MORE PERMANENT THOUGH.
I CAN ASK WHAT CAR HIRE FIRM THEY USED IF YOU WANT. ALSO ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME WHICH I CAN FORWARD ON THAT MAY ALSO BE HELPFUL TO THEM. HOPE YOUR MOVE GOES AS WELL AS MY SISTERS REGARDS |
Don't go with Bayswater to rent a car. We were out in Perth in May and were advised to stay clear of them. The cost of hiring a car may seem appealing but the owner of the company has been to court many times. He does not have the adequate insurance to cover you and you end up paying much much more to hire your car than they advertise.
We were shown newspaper cuttings to support this for every time he has appeared in court and the amount of times he has been prosecuted. We hired a car from a family run business called Drivewest car rental (based in Scarborough). They were excellent. |
Golden Girl, thanks for that information, the one you suggested Drivewest Car Rentals for anyone interested the details are.

Dave&Mel,
If you make a reservation at Drivewest before 30/6/03 don't forget to quote the winter special (20% discount) if your rental period commences prior to 31/8/03. I have just sent an email to Drivewest because I had some questions before we decide where to book. Perth Newcomers
Hi there Dave and Mel
Seema like a lot of newcomers to Perth in the near future. Wonder if there is any kind of newcomers "club" (god I hate that word) or bar where everyone could meet up. My husband (no kids) and I will arrive there Septemberish all things going well. Keep in touch!! Good luck with all the emigration arrangements Tracy:) |
Re: Perth Newcomers
Hi Tracy
Don't know if you already know about the Poms in Perth web site which is pretty good for Perth related issues and getting to know others heading for Perth. A meet was recently arranged in Kings Park in Perth and I kow they intend arranging others. Current thread on this can be found at http://www.pomsinperth.com/discussio...opic.php?t=220 Hope this helps. Martin |
