Default Permanent residency

Does anyone know how long applications for permanent residency take? My wife needs to apply and I'd like for it to have been granted before we move to Aus (hopefully in June/July time).

Depends on the visa type. Are you Australian? If your wife is applying for a spouse visa, these can be granted in a couple of weeks. If you have any specific questions, you're likely to get a better response on the immigration forum.

Yes, I am Australian. I will ask on other forum, sorry.

Thanks

Spouse visa applications are normally processed quite quickly. For applying in London, see http://www.australia.org.uk

You should sort out now all documentation that's going to be needed (full birth certs etc). Also - your wife can do here police checks in advance provided she accepts they are only valid for 12 months. For medicals, it's simplest to wait until she is asked.

How long have you been with your wife and do you have children? This determines whether she gets a temporary or permanent visa initially.

Your signature says you've lived in the UK since age 10 - have you got British citizenship? If not, you should consider applying for naturalisation before leaving the UK. If you leave the UK without becoming a citizen, you will lose your right to return as an individual.

Thanks Jeremy. Yes I have British citizenship too. Married for 4 years, been together for 6.5 years, no kids. I understand that if you can prove you've been together for more than 5 years (which we can) then it's fairly straightforward. It was just the time thing I was unsure about. I'm going into the Australia High Commission on Tuesday to submit my passport application, so I will try and get the ball rolling for my wife then.

Thanks again.
