Default Police, teachers strikes loom

The 1970s in the UK revisited , the ungrateful buggers want a living wage at the over taxed payers expense.

THE Western Australian Government yesterday claimed it would cost taxpayers $600 million to meet pay demands of state teachers and police.

The Government was tabling a proposed three per cent annual pay rise over three years for WA's 20,000 teachers and 5000 police officers.

It's offer is well short of teachers' demands for a 30 per cent increase over three years and the police bid for an annual five per cent payrise over the same period.

As unprecedented industrial action appeared likely, Treasurer Eric Ripper said the demands from both unions were unrealistic and that strike action would be unreasonable.

"Whichever way you look at it, we are offering a wage increase over and above the increase in the cost of living. It is a fair wage increase, and it is an increase which has already been budgeted for," Mr Ripper told 6PR radio.
