As a basic estimate I would say
Large fridge $1500 (that would get you something good, possibly with a water/icemaker)
TV - anything from $500 for an 80 cm to $3500 for a 140cm widescreen.
Washer - saw one yesterday $499 for a 5.5kg front loader but Id get something bigger for about $700-800.
Dishwaher - $800 - $1000
DVD - $400 for a recorder
microwave - $500 max! Probably considerably less.
Hoover - $200 should get you something half decent.
So apart from the TV you are looking at less than $4500 for the above (if my maths is correct )

And going for the quality, reliable products as mentioned, I think $10K is a decent budget. Its always better to slightly over estimate.

upright fridge and freezer $2000
tv $600

hoover $250
bedroom furniture-ikea approx $3000

total roughly $10,000 approx!''

these are prices i threw together at the beginning of this year so we had a fairly loose idea of what we would be aiming to save to cover this particular bit of spending.

Re: Paying "cash" for discounts
As a bit of an aside, I was offered the chance of a present of a new digital camera during my recent UK trip (rush of blood to Mrs Rog's head I guess). I costed the EOS 350D in Chichester, then in Singapore on the way home but didn't buy.
Where's a good place in Oz to get this sort of thing? I've always got a reasonable discount at HN but you always think you can do better elsewhere!

LG!!!
No crap in your place then All high quality stuff.
By the way, I'm not a snob when it comes to electrical goods. I actually do the cost of ownership study. It makes sense to get the highest quality, most energy efficient goods.
Buying a cheap washer means you have to pay more in water and electricity and water bills, and of course you have to buy a new one sooner, or pay for lots of repair men
LG! No crap

Bing Lee are well known for giving discounts. You need to haggle a little - especially if you are buying something more expensive or if you're buying a number of things at once.

Re: Paying "cash" for discounts
Our removal company had dropped our pride and joy widescreen CRT tv so we used the insurance money toward upgrading to a gurt big plasma model.
A few of the electrical stores have offers where they will "beat any advertised price" and on this occassion it was Retrovision. They even had the slogan on specially printed t-shirts that all the staff were wearing.
We asked if they did a particular Samsung set and the guy looked it up on his PC and said yes and it came in at $8k. We said no, Samsung had just reduced the price of all their models the previous week. He checked somewhere else and confirmed we were right and it had been reduced to $6k.
So staring at his T-shirt we said and you will beat any advertised price so we have found it advertised at just over $4k.
It was in fact an Ebay powerseller buy it now offer and we thought no way will they match that but we shall try. Well, after 3 phone calls to different people in head office they did honour their T-shirts and in fact saved a further $20 on the delivery cost.
It really does pay to do some research and shop around.
