Re: passports(sorry)
Yes you can. We have decided that once our UK ones expire we will not renew them. Our Australian ones are more important to us and to us there is no advantage of having valid UK ones as well as valid Australian ones.

Re: passports(sorry)
As both countries accept dual nationality, you may have a valid passport from the country you consider serves you better and only apply for the other one when necessary (with documents such as your British birth cert or your Oz citizenship cert). Cheers.

It depends on if you plan on going to Europe at all. If so then it will be a lot easier to have the UK passport and not have to go down the visa route

You don't have to go down the visa route as a british citizen just because you don't have a valid passport.

Re: passports(sorry)
Wouldn't you still have to apply for visas (albeit free and easy to get) for EU countries if you wanted to travel around Europe? You might get into the UK easily with an Australian passport, but an EU (UK) passport could make life easier in other countries...

Re: passports(sorry)
Obviously if the OP is going on a tour around Europe then a valid EU passport would be useful.

Australians don't require visas to most EU countries under the Schengen Convention. The UK has separate rules but no visa is required either.
UK Passport is useful for some strange places like Brazil where no visa is required, but an Australian one requires. It helps in a few places round the world.
