As far as I am aware a passport is needed when leaving /entering a country as both Brisbane and Sydney are in Australia. Then i think the answer is No.

Absolutely no need for a passport - it's like flying from London to Glasgow - your in the same country (sort of). The only reason you might need a passport is if you are flying on an E-ticket and they need a photo ID, in which case a drivers license will do just as well.

Same applies if you are going to Tasmania

I normally take my passport too in case I get my wallet stolen and get stuck 1000's of k's away without alternative photo id. Don't fancy a long coach journey.

However you do need a passport to go to Norfolk Island, even though it's an Australian territory. It has its own immigration laws.

Guess its best to have it just in case for photo id, when taking the internal flights a couple of weeks back we only needed the ticket but some desks also asked for the passport as I was on an E-ticket, surprised after 911 and all that things like id of some sort is not needed to get on a plane, even if it is an internal flight.

Photo-id is normally required for internal flights, however a passport should *not* be required. A driving licence will normally do.

Which airline is this?

Qantas, then again cuase I was on a prebooked tour then I guess they knew we were English visitors rather than 'proper domestic' customers, so assumed we would have passports to use as ID.

You will also need a passport if you are a domestic (i.e. internal Australian) passenger on an international flight - the airline and the authorities might let you board without one, but it will involve a lot of hassle and delay.

I always take my passport as ID.
Some places (though not sure about airports) don't accept UK driving licences as ID, even though it has your photo on it
No one can argue with a passport, so take it to be on the safe side.

Good optron, though not practical or necessary when you're only here for a few months and don't have a car

Oooooo he careful here - even though you are flying internally, some airlines go via New Zealand so you WILL need your passport even if you are not disembarking as you are technically flying Internationally......

now before i am corrected my source of info was from a television program similar to "airport" where a family arrived at check in without passports and were not allowed to fly.

Silly i know.......did anyone else see this episode?
