Hi,

Unfortunately you cannot take a bird with you, otherwise I would definately be taking mine.

I will have to find a home for him at some point (had him for 17 years so will be heartbreaking).

Unless the rules have changed since I looked this time last year.

I'll have another search.

I have just emailed Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service asking about importing pet parrots.

Will let you know if I get an answer.

It may vary from state to state, so check out where you are heading for. They all have different rules - for example, hamsters are ilegal in Qld, but OK in NSW.

Rabbits are also illegal to keep as pets in Qld, unless you run a kindie or pre-school where some pets are kept...

I reckon Hamsters are illegal on the same principle as rabbits.. if the little suckers escape and breed, they will be become a pest.. cute as they, it's better to try and encourage the government to make keeping a bilby as a pet legal instead.. http://members.iinet.net.au/~rabbit/bushqld.htm

this link provides some interested reading: http://www.nrm.qld.gov.au/pests/psas...estanimals.pdf

Cockatiels are native to Australia, so you won't have to look far for them.

I have had an answer back from AQIS:

Thank you for your enquiry.

AQIS Live Animal Imports facilitates the import of animals and reproductive material into Australia. AQIS does this by applying import conditions that are determined by Biosecurity Australia.

Biosecurity Australia has not developed import conditions for this animal and as such the importation of birds is not permitted.

Their contact details are as follows:
Animal Biosecurity
Ph: (02) 6272 4465
Fax: (02) 6272 3399
EM: [email protected]

I hope this is of assistance to you. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Please quote the AQIS reference number as listed at the top of the email in any future correspondence to assist us in responding to your enquiries more efficiently.

Kind Regards,

Kylie Black
