This is a very good post, and one which I feel very strongly about. After years and years of reading the English newspapers, listening to the English news, and overhearing (and often, I must admit, joining in) conversations knocking England in some way or another, I was convinced it was the worst possible place on earth (or one of them!). So we emigrated. Yep, everything seemed wonderful here, the people are so friendly, the newspapers and media in general think that Australia is the best place on earth etc. etc.

Unfortunately, although being two very different countries in many, many ways, they both have their problems. Its just that Australians have been conditioned to "talk up" their country. In some ways this is very good news -

At school assembly this morning, the Headteacher was giving the children a right lecture to a few kids who kept their hats on during the singing of the National Anthem, saying it was disrespectful etc. Can you imagine English children standing up and singing the National Anthem? Nope. Most schoolchildren in England probably wouldn`t have a clue what the words were anyway.

Again at assembly today, the children were given a talk on taking pride in their environment and another lecture followed on picking up litter in the playground. English school playgrounds are awash with litter and the kids couldn`t give a monkeys!

It is a great pity that so many English people (and children) have forgotten what "respect" means - and please don`t quote Ali bloody G here - and also a pity that a lot of English people have a "couldn`t give a toss" attitude when it comes to their own communities.

If you look at all the big mining concerns and their origins I think you you find Great Britain has and still does more in the mining industry world wide than most including Australia.
Playing digging up dirt is for third world natives , primary producers who buy back the products that the dirt has been manifactured into.
