Just wondered how many hits this would get! It just shows the culture difference between the UK and Oz. Call a person from Pakistan a ‘Paki’ in the UK and you WILL be frowned upon, it’s not PC is it. (Not in the UK at least). I haven’t yet got use to the radio and television here in Oz referring to the Paki’s (cricket of course).

I’ve not got a problem with its use and neither do the Pakistani’s by all accounts, after all Australians are Aussies or New Zealanders are Kiwi’s, the English love to be called Pom’s. So why the difference – would like to hear some comments …

The Australians who I spoke who used the term had no idea of the way it was used in Britain. The same people would not have used the term 'abo' or 'nigger' in reference to blacks and were suprised that I was suprised to hear them use the phrase. I have always found the term has been used by racists in the UK so refrain from using it. Racists who like to 'paki bash' have dirtied the word. Poms do not get bashed into pulp for being English.

Not entirely true - in Glasgow last year a white boy was killed by a group of Asians.

It happend to my daughter by a gang of somalians or blacks if the spellings wrong she was not killed but was very nearly, the police said they could not class it as a racialist attack because the white is a minority coulor but if it was a switched around it would be.they still havent done sod all even though the gang is known to them, merseyside police are a lode of lazy W*****S.

Even in India, Pakistanis are called Pakis and it has never been a derogatory term. It's just a short version.

We have always called them Paki's in the UK without meaning to offend. I suppose it depends on the context that it is used. We would say "I am popping down the Paki's to get some fags" because ALL the local shops are owned by them.

You would not feel racist saying you are going for an Indian or a Chinese so why the Paki's? That's where they come from.

something very similar........we can call whites as "whites" but we are very careful not to call dark-skinned people as "blacks"

Some people would class fag as an insult to gays ,nigers short for nigerian's but many blacks arn't nigerian so they take it as an insult to there nationality you could go on for ever even though you may not meen any insults some will take it that way some won't.

Before leaving the UK there was a TV advert running in Scotland (at least)attempting to show the harm of using the term 'Chinky' couldn't see that happen here somehow, there isint the need for it here though I've heard the term used many times - WHY? Any ideas?

sorry to haer what happened to your daughter. I hope you find a better life in Oz.
I wonder why so many people wonna leave the UK, not so much because they have been attacked but because they feel they are no longer protected / supported in "their" own country

The daughter of a friend , who is white by the way was witness to an attack on her boyfriend by a group of Pakistanis,sadly her boyfriend died of his stab wounds.
The treatment my friends daughter has received from the police has been nothing more than disgraceful, and just makes me more determined to get out of this godforsaken country.
