Good point Polly - but beware the Thought Police...!

As a father of kids who are in bed by 7:30 I'm not sure what I am meant to be doing in the dark evenings - going for a stroll on the beach, bit of kayaking, some surfing? I thought I was in the majority of normal people in Oz who not only get inside quick smart as the dusk settles (at 6-6:30) and the mozzies come out, but passes the time watching TV. If anyone knows of Ozzies who are living an outdoor lifestyle in the evenings, and not watching TV, I'd love to meet them!

Pub!
Southpark was good last night. An evening walk along the beach is pretty good. The joys of not living in a suburban wasteland. Seems like peoples waistlines are in proportion to the distance they live from the ocean. Mozzies aren't bad in the Eastern burbs and we have daylight savings down here.

Fancy living in a Sydney dog box anyone?

As BP says, mozzies are not a problem in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney and don't stop you from sitting outside in the evening. Doesn't get dark till 8-8.30 (daylight savings) so plenty of time for the kids to enjoy playing outside before bedtime.

When my kids were small the beach was the place to be in the early evening - particularly if it had been a hot day. Bronte Beach on warm evenings was like a playgroup, there were so many small kids there. Never took ours any other time as the sun's too hot for them in the middle of the day.

Life doesn't stop in Sydney just because it's dark. We often walk along the cliff/beach/streets during summer evenings and it's just as busy as during the daytime, with heaps of people out and about doing similar things.

Depends on where you live, I guess...

Melbourne is magnificent in the summer, it gets dark at 9 and there is no humidity or excessive heat (well, hardly ever). It's the winters that we need TV for (a little on the chilly side, some nights) which is why my hubby is at home as I...type with the foxtel fella getting us hooked up . It costs $49,95 a month and we are going to sign a 6 month lease (although at the back of my mind I am aware that even if we hardly watch it, it may not be easy going back). I quite enjoy Rove (although he gets up my nose, a little), K&K. Has anyone seen that show, I think it's called "Border Security" based in Australia's airports and Seaports, showing passport control and stories of dodgy travellers and drug smugglers...a little like "Airport" which was based at Heathrow? I am really enjoying that...

Border Security is interesting. Australian Story is always worth watching and that programme about finding a Sheila that has just finished was good

Sadly I will have to move out of the Eastern suburbs at that point. Who knows where and the options look increasingly grim unless property prices crash. Looked at a 3 bedroom shell of a house up the road. One of those "renovators delights". $800,000. First time buyers are there if anything comes up whilst those higher up the chain cannot move on becuase the first time buyers cannot afford to start the chain.

The alternatives are places with bad public transport, no soul and frankly the lifestyle would be crap.

The alternative is a large unit. Bring on the interest rate rises to get the idiots out of the housing market.

"Australian" free to air TV - two parts - commercial and government (SBS / ABC).

Don't be too disparaging of commercial TV - in the face of enormous difficulties, such as being able to afford watchable programmes, it performs a valiant service of providing marketing victims with novel alternative avenues for ensuring they are not troubled with the mind numbing agony of managing wealth. By ensuring the un-bright remain tethered to the treadmill, commercial TV encourages faster wastage of raw materials and a growing economy.

Occassionally, government TV produces a plum but don't sit on your lard waiting for it - consult a programme guide.

In the meantime - research and development - a better recipie, a better golf swing, a better whatever. Vegetable grow best in the garden.

(And the weather again).

But as for the original question, McAuliff, Fat Pizza, Life Support too. After that there was the occassional Premiership match that was a noon kick off worth staying up for, then the next best was 15 year old repeats of Frost.

Wat is the SBS channel all about?? 8pm foreign language programme, 9pm English football, 10pm soft porn. What a mix!!!

But as so many of you say, with the Aussie weather who wants to be stuck in front of the tv???
