Default Oz Teaching.

Hey all

My husband and I have applied to Canada for a skilled workers visa, I am a teacher and the first applicant. However I have been seriously put off as there seems to be a distinct lack of teaching jobs in Canada.

We are now looking to move to Australia, (the application looks even more complicated) and I am wondering what the job situation is like out there, can anyone advise?

I am a History teacher with five years teaching experience and three as Head of Department. I work in Inner city schools and find it survivable (and surprisingly enjoyable at times) I have a 2:1 MA Hons degree.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks.

Try the regular Australia forum. Right now you're in the immigration section so you might not get a lot of help.

Also check the section for different proffessions, there's one just for teaching.

Hello,

Canada is one of the places we liked but however research suggested that teaching jobs were very thin on the ground.

We are on WA sponsorship, and if you are high school teacher then you have several options. High school is more of a teacher shortage.

WA is on a 457 visa, but get you to Oz quick. Then after 2 years in rural school they do your Permanent visa. This is good option for those who want to get to OZ quick or do not have enough points.

Job and house is arrange for arrival.

Otherwise I think Victoria is also recruiting and you can get sponsorship.

However you can get your own Permanent visa if you have adequate teaching experience and PGCE etc. (Does not accept GTP)

Applying for Australia is not so difficult. You also have more choices eg sponsorship route or your own permanent visa.

I taught high school history in the UK too, before we moved out here!
I did some research on it, about a year ago, and found that history in itself is not really a shortage subject - not like physics or languages or something. So you will be looking at areas that are in need, which are most likely to be isolated rural 'towns' where most people don't want to live.
If you're after an adventure then it might be great! But you don't seem to get much influence over where you are placed. After a few years in an 'undesirable' location, you earn points to go somewhere more 'desirable' - but it might have to be within the same state, as each state operates a different education authority. (So if you move states you have to go through the registration process all over again with the new authority, whatever nationality you are. This can take weeks/months to do.)

Hope something works out for you one way or another.

HI!

Thought i'd draw your attention to the thread I've been writing all year on this very subject

I think the best way to go is to do some supply (or trt) as they call it here and then, when a job comes up, the head can do some requesting

I'm working in a local senior college.
You might want to consider that too as, unlike in the U.K., the wages are the same for teachers in FE as in high schools
