OZ more expensive than UK
We moved over to Perth last August under an expat deal with an oil company. We are permanent residents but the company was/is very obliging and we get all the expat benefits.
OH told me that from November last year we have been receiving a Commodities and Services Allowance (CSA) of £12 which is calculated by a specialist company. They take hundreds of different countries in the world and compare the cost of specific commodities and services (bread, milk, clothing, phone, petrol, gas etc).
So it seems, by their calculations, as of November 2007 that OZ is more expensive than UK, albeight by only £12 a month!

Is that before or after you've filled the car up? . Paid $1.21/lt last Tuesday and it was less than 50 bucks.

I think it depends on how much lettuce is at the moment on conversion, or cheese or....
Seriously its about the same to live in Australia or the UK comparative to wages. I think we can safely assume that 12GBP or $25 per MONTH isnt exactly a huge to amount and can probably be put down to pure mathematical rounding or simply the comparative costs being slightly different at that exact moment from the selection of products analysed.
To say that its more expensive here than the UK based on a variance of under $1 a day is to my mind not exactly a true reflection at all.

I wonder if the exchange rate plays a part in this calculation. I've always reckoned that 2:1 is a good rule of thumb for cost of living comparisons. That is, you have to earn twice as much in $s as you did in £s to have the same standard of living (e.g. someone earning $80k would have roughly the same standard of living as someone on £40k - sunshine and beaches excepted).
Now that the exchange rate is nearly 2 for 1, I'm not surprised that the cost of living is now comparable.
