Interest rate rises are good. I see Bankwest are now offering 8%.

The worst thing of all is it is yet another nail in John Howard's coffin. Don't get me wrong, I am not a particular fan of his but Kevin Rudd is going to turn the economy back to like it was in England in the 70's. Half the workforce will be on strike as they don't have a silver spoon to stir their coffee etc and interest rates will head up several whole points.

Yes but only on a drip-feed monthly savings plan. I think the best rate for lump sums is currently Citibank at 7% - please correct me if you find anything better!

Yep. KRudd is going to screw things up big time. We are going to have a recession that we never needed to have - handed to us by a generation that has never known one.

Dont think todays Unionists are that stupid. Sure there may be protests, Sure there may be work bans, but strikes are just about extinct like the dinosaurs now.

There will be a roll back of work choices though, and workplaces that play hard ball in that area are in for a rocky road. WA will probably suffer the most with this.

The unions policy of not helping people on workchoice awards has paid dividends.

As for the rate rise, they will probably keep going up until the steam comes of the housing market, then there will be the correction that people have been banging on about since late 2005. 20pct probably.

What happens in America, will be repeated in the UK, and will be repeated here.

66 pages on this subject from South London here.

Are you implying that those of us buying new homes now will probably become susceptible to negative equity?

I read what the people employed in the city of London have to say on the issue on the above thread. Some are directors of Merchant banks, some are economists, others are financial journalists. They are certainly implying that.

Haven't they predicted something similar before (in the UK) and it never materialised?

According to this link it looks like you have to keep $5k in a no-interest transaction account to get that rate. Unless there's another one.
