But these days, you must do the theory test. It isn't that bad, as long as you read the rules book for a few days first, to understand the differences between UK and here. eg: being allowed to overtake on the inside, The transit lane 100 metre rule
and a few other things.
You can take the test once a day until you pass it.
Dont worry if you get it wrong the first time, the staff will discuss the wrong answers with you, to help next time.
I got exactly the same 30 questions on my second attempt, but I think thats QLD for you
I didn't have to do an eyesight test ! Did anyone else ?

Here in Florida , as in India, RED lights are purely advisory!

Just remembered something else...
I was told at the RTA office that if I did not pass the theory test within three months of arriving here then I would have to take the practical test as well !!
(and remember, I already passed it once back in 1995)
Now this is NSW and what with the problems I had getting a Medicare card, I'm beginning to wonder if it is just me the authorities have it in for?
Maybe they didn't like the fact that I left Australia the first time around?
Or maybe they just don't like my pommie face?

Aside from the fact that you are sposed to get Oz licence within the specified time frames, you'll find that many insurers will offer lower premiums if you have an Oz licence - this certainly worked for me.
Also read the small print on the excess section - you may pay higher excess if you don't hold Oz licence. E.g. it could say "licence for less than 2 years - excess = $xxx" - ask them whether this means Oz licence for less than 2 years or any licence for <2 yrs.

Just to let you know that i did the online test (NSW one i think) and failed although my 11 year old daughter passed!!!!!

The police consider that a Permanent Resident in the State, is driving without a licence, and will be fined for that, if they do not have an OZ licence after 3 months. Therefore, the insurance company can consider the same, ie: you are not a licenced driver.
