Just a general question.
Is the cost of living in Australia at least 10% less than it is in the UK.
Is the cost of living in Australia at least 10% less than it is in the UK.

That's far too simplistic though.
UK cost of living is skewed by London (being the most expensive city in world at the moment) and varies greatly across the country and I would imagine the same applies in Australia.
Don't know what the answer is though

Some people on here find it is cheaper here, others say it is about the same, and others again say it is much more expensive here.
I find it cheap, but then I've lived here long enough to know where to buy things, not like most newcomers

And of course, we don't buy the expensive pre-packed food all the time, like we did in the UK. But I adapted to Australia, eventually

Hi All
Thanks for the information.
Its just that my company are offering me a transfer and they are negotiating wages, so I don't want to get caught short on "promises" and end up worse off financially.
It looks like I definitely have to swallow a pay cut, but its just by which % I can go or should I say afford.
Whats the average wage in Aus?
I'm lucky my wife is a good cook and we normally don't live out of packets, we do use fresh produce most of the time.
All info is greatly appreciated.

NSW - $54,662
ACT - $60,684
QLD - $49,600
VIC - $51,600
TAS - $46,280
These figures are quoted WITHOUT Overtime or Bonuses, ie: "ordinary time earnings"
Wages even within a State can vary tremendously.
A link at the ABS shows average wages in 2001 for each of the NSW suburbs, and some examples are:
Mosman: average wage of $77,943 averaged over 12,151 wage earners
Bingara: average wage of $25,317 averaged over 495 wage earners
Coffs Harbour: average wage of $27,655 with 18,454 wage earners.
Parramatta: average wage of $35,973 with 59,304 wage earners.
Penrith: average wage of $34,431 with 76,727 wage earners.
Remember, these are 2001 figures where the NSW average wage was $37,191, compared to the 2005 figure of $54,662. ie: 2005 is 47% higher than in 2001.

The WA figure would be the highest of all, but that is scewed by the very high incomes that the miners get. Along with the fact that WA has a very high number of Millionaires aswell.
I did post some figures for All States some time back, a year or so ?

Thanks for that. I bit dated but very useful nonetheless.
