Biggest headache is knowing where to move to. How do you decide? We have two kids 12 and 9 and think its important schools are good but how do you get their 'SATS' results so you can compare.
Any advise on the does and don't of where to move to initially would be appreciated.

Not familiar with anywhere in Perth, my uncle and family live in a place called Rockingham (south of Perth) he had teenage kids when they came over and they have done well for themselves regarding school and education. Deciding factor for us on going to Sydney was the jobs, with our industries we had better chances of finding work quickly in Sydney, Perth and other cities couldn't offer us the same opportunities.

Hi BOVIS
Congrats on an interesting thread, keep posting your experiances . How are you finding it compared to UK? Are kids settling in ok, adjusting to new climate etc.
We too have twins and are looking at NZ or OZ interested to hear of peoples experiances of both countries.
good luck

So far so good, we're starting to settle down a bit since coming out almost 9 weeks ago, the weather is much the same as any good Irish summer , with lots of rain and some sunshine in between, so the kids haven't had any major climate change yet !! Have found the people very friendly though you do have to make a huge effort to meet people esp for the sake of the kids, my 3.5 year old was starting to miss her friends from home (i found this heart breaking ).

Re: Out here 7 weeks with young family
Bovis, thanks for the info. We are moving to Sydney with young children aged 7 and 4 and want to make sure that we move to an area that is safe and has lots of other children around. Is Concord like that and what about Burnwood?
I am also interested in your comments about the price that you have had to pay to rent. We had hoped to pay about AU$350 per week for a 2 bedroom place. Is this too little to get a decent home?

Hi bovis,
it's extremely good to hear from people living what we all won't to do.
Keep on telling us how it is. I liked the bit abouit the weather.
The cost side looks interesting, $1000 / week for housing and child care looks worrying.
I hope it works out well for you.
Bye

From living in Concord for 9 weeks i feel the area is safe and child friendly. My preference would be Concord over Burwood as Concord is a quieter suburb with more green areas and beside the bay. (all depends what your looking for in a locality) note Burwood is about 1.5 miles from Concord so only a short bus or car ride to the main shopping area and train into town. You can also take the ferry into the city from the concord area (really nice journey especially with the kids at the week end, only takes about 30 mins).
One of the estate agents told us that Concord, Five dock, Habberfield and Abbotsford are all good suburbs on the west side of city.
$350 dollars is a good guide for a 2 bed house or unit, but we found that the quality of accomodation for rent in this price range quite poor compared to what we had at home, but we did find one and it's spacious, be prepared to look around and maybe wait till something you like comes up. ( may not be practical if staying in short term accom).
Good luck AM
