Default Orthodontics, Medical Insurance and Tax Rebates

We had our first visit to the orthodontic dentist today. We're on temp permits (457's) and have cover with Medibank. Our insurance cover for orthdontic work doesn't kick in for another 5 months.

When it came to paying today's bill I was pleased to hear that we can claim back the consultation charges from our insurers, even though we're not yet covered for the actual work.

Then I was advised to keep all receipts for medical and dental work because we can claim back the tax on them at the end of the year.

Is this true & are there any other things we can claim back the tax on? We're already getting a LAFHA - thanks to advice on this forum
