Organic Milk/Goat's Milk
Does anybody know where I can get organic semi-skimmed cow's milk, and semi-skimmed goat's milk in Perth (NOR).
We had been using both for years in the UK but they seem to be very rare here. Coles online have goat's milk (never see it in store though) but it's unpasteurised so not what I was looking for.
Also organic semi-skim cow's milk seems to be non existent - I don't think the staff even knew what I was on about when I asked.
I can get long life stuff but it's horrible!
All the supermarkets in the UK stocked them as standard so they aren't unusual items (well maybe they are here I suppose).

Pure Organic milk is available in most major supermarkets and some convenience and specialty health food outlets in Queensland (South East region only), New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, South Australia.

Yep, already checked woolworths and they don't stock it in Perth, nor online.

Re: Organic Milk/Goat's Milk
Hi Sunshine 7, I found 3 brands of organic/biodynamic/in-conversion cow's milk in a shop near us:
Bd Farm Paris Creek (Victoria, in-conversion), full cream & skimmed $5.99/2 litre, use by date 6 Oct
Demeter full cream, $2.79/1 litre, use by date 9 Oct (www.demeter.org.au)
Margaret River full cream $5.99/2 litre, use by date 14 Oct
I have seen goat's milk there previously (from Gidgegannup I think), but they didn't have any today. This shop is called Brighton Road in Scarborough. It is a sister shop to the Boatshed in Cottesloe and we only use it for emergencies or treats, as it's pretty pricey. There are a few places like this around, but prices tends to be high, eg Herdsman Fresh. As you want to buy these products regularly, you should be able to get the price down. It's interesting that the Victorian product above is being sold for the same price as the WA product.
Have a look at this thread on another forum (couple of years old, though) as it mentions a few possible sources, including Mindarie:
http://www.essentialbaby.com.au/foru...p/t570994.html
such as
http://www.trueorganic.com.au/results.php
Also try the Slow Food website: http://slowfoodperth.org.au/projects/
which lists several farmer's markets:
Albany Farmers’ Market
Boyanup Farmers’ Market
Kalamunda Farmers’ Market
Margaret River Farmers’ Market
Mount Claremont Farmers’ Market
Subiaco Farmers’ Market

You might find the products you're looking for in Coles or Woolworths in certain locations, ie where there's likely to be locals interested in the alternative side of life. Fremantle, the Hills and Scarborough might be suburbs like this. Supermarkets in Perth tend to stock non-standard foods based on local demographics. For example, the Coles in North Perth tends to have more Greek and Italian products, Coles at Scarborough is good for Japanese items, Dog Swamp and Dianella and good for Jewish foods, etc, and of course, Whitfords and Joondalup and points inbetween are good for UK products. And yes, I am a bit of a supermarket addict.

Re: Organic Milk/Goat's Milk
Thanks for that Helen TD. It seems that organic milk is perhaps only available in full-cream and even then only in specialist shops. Ditto Goat's milk. It's very strange given the amount of people who have cow's milk intolerance and the amount of people who don't want to ingest all the hormones which are prevalent in non-organic cow's milk.
We came from a tiny place in the UK but even there everything milk-wise was readily available - I haven't used the milk with hormones and antibiotics for for years! I think we will just have to get used to the (not so nice) taste of UHT milk because we can easily get that organic and goat's here in WA.

Re: Organic Milk/Goat's Milk
What a shame it's not just a mainstream choice though. The reason I use what I use is that I have seen, clearly, what firstly non-organic cows milk did to my daughter and secondly what (any) cow's milk did to my son. All anecdotal of course but nevertheless very strong evidence for me as a mum.
I know through trial and error what is healthiest for us - and I think that if there were a wide choice as there is in even the tiniest towns in the UK then people might realise the same thing.

But as a family we all drink semi-skimmed goats milk, which is the norm now in most supermarkets, so hopefully I can find some stockists in NSW.
Cheers
