Recently discussed on here, for someone moving there with a 13 year old, but you might find it useful http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=728923.

If you have any questions, feel free to post them or pm me. If you are moving here make sure you get some short term accomodation assistance as part of the package.
If you like, food, wine, golf, the outdoors and peace and quiet you will be fine. If you want a buzzy hectic nightlife you may struggle.

Good luck

Scotty

Depends where you are working and what you are looking for. There are no areas that I would consider very dodgy - but I've lived in Glasgow and London and have a higher tolerance than the locals. The "better" areas are north and west of the railway, and the areas that the locals would avoid like the plague are Glenroi and Bowen. However given the shortage of rentals, you need to decide on your priorities. There is a particular shortage of 1 and 2 bed units and I would avoid what we would consider a flat. This is because the Oz equivalent of leasehold management -strata-is a bit of a mess and it is managed poorly here. Your chances of getting a leaking roof fixed in a flat in Orange are negligable!
If you have a look at domain and point out a couple of rentals that you like the look of, I can give you the agents view on how these are likely to rent. (I work as a rental agent)

Byng Street is right in the centre of town - you will be close to the police station. You might be able to get somewhere you can walk to work!
There are two main search engines that all the agents use.

www.realestate.com.au

and

http://www.domain.com.au/Search/rent...rchterm=Orange

domain is the easiest to use and most properties are on both. Don't bother about enquiring on them before you arrive - afraid that you really need to shortlist online and then go round the agents (who are not open at weekends).

Welcome to regional NSW - a more relaxed pace of life!

Hope your move over goes smoothly

Scotty
