Opening bank account with HSBC once in Oz
Seems like HSBC is the way to go for banking in Oz. I'm temporarily going to be in Australia until moving on to NZ, so won't be depositing funds, just enough to open the account and have other money paid in.
Has anyone waited until getting to Australia to open an account with HSBC? what sort of information do you need?
thanks

Donna,
You need someone who's known you to sign the ID bits. If they're not Aussie they need to be a bank employee authorised to open accounts so in the UK everyone's been getting the bank manager to sign.
In Oz lots of occupations are acceptable to sign but that won't help you if there's noone there who's known you for a year. Do you know anyone in Oz? If so, check their occupation is on the list for HSBC ID. If not, do the application in the UK.
Good luck,
Jo

Hi
We have been in Oz nearly 3 weeks and have just opened an HSBC account. Sooo easy! All we needed was our driving licences and passports and we needed to deposit $2000 which you could spend once it was opened. It has taken about a week to receive our cards. There were no problems with witnesses etc signing on our behalf as the lady herself witnessed.
Also no ridiculous charges with HSBC who are by far in our opinion the best value for money.
Good luck
