Does anyone know if there's an Australian equivalent to the Open University in order to do some distance learning?

You could also look at the University of London External Programme:

And lets face it, with the internet you can study online from institutions in other countries (eg London as Jeremy points out). Can OU courses be done in another country??
TAFE colleges do a lot of distance learning as well.
Recently we had an Aussie doing teaching practice at our (Scottish) school online from Monash (he's doing a Dip Ed course remotely)

The University of London doesn't have any geographic restrictions, to my knowledge.

Re: Open Uni
Slightly off topic but sort of related.
If you just want to learn, but don't care for credits or any recognization, have a look at MIT's courses online. They are all available free. You can learn about computers, Japanese culture, Shakespeare, plasma physics, entrepreneurial finance, space propulsion, micro and macro economics, sailing yacht design, "engineering of trees", "causes and prevention of war", "magic, witchcraft and the spirit world", or just about anything.
All free. No registration.
Too good to be true? Go have a look yourself.

The catch is you don't get any faculty support, but you can download all course materials that interest you - some are more complete than others. And you may need to go and buy books for some of the required readings if you are serious about it.
Cheers,

Re: Open Uni
Just remember while it's possible to do some OU courses from anywhere in the world, they cost a lot more outside the EU. A short course I was looking at cost £99 in the UK and £270 from Oz. That's a lot of dollars.
