OMG! $30,000 Fine!!!
I've changed my mind now....thought I'd do it on the sly for the kids
...You see we found what I thought was an abandoned pet Rabbit last week. The kids thought it was wonderful ..... now after finding the rightul owners of the somewhat cheeky escapee, they offered us one of their baby rabbits.....now of course up here in Queensland rabbits are illegal, so I'd thought I'd check out the punishment for the crime.....
Guinea Pigs just never did it for me
Jan (rabbitless and intends to stay so)

Really? Since when is owning a Pet Rabbit illegal? I have never heard that before?
Is that only in QLD?

Yep, they are an introduced Pest.....Rabbit proof fence and all that. Queensland is the only State in which they are banned these days. It's Hamsters that are banned allover I believe (for the same reason)
We do have wild rabbits here (Gold Coast), but it's mainly Hares that you see.

Yes, I know all about wild rabbits being pests but hadn't heard that pet rabbits were illegal? My sister has always had pet rabbits and she's in QLD and my neices have five pet rabbits but they live in VIC.

I just read online that QLD is the only state that has made keeping rabbits illegal. Surely they could just inforce that people desex their rabbits instead?

You're allowed a rabbit in QLD if you're a magician.

That's mad! Wow though talk about a prohabitive fine!
Now I have a vote for the guinea pigs - we had pet rabbits and guinea pigs and both were lovely, at one point both lived in our house (in Bedfordshire, not Aus - not that it would make much difference!)
No vote for fish though! Not cuddly in anyway and tanks are a pig to keep clean!

The girls had to leave their beloved rabbits behind when we moved over. Please don't let them know that some people keep them illegally - life would become hell

And you aren't supposed to do anything about it.

That's not actually true, you're just not meant to kill them. You can however, get them relocated, or put a possum box in a nearby tree and block off the entrance in your roof.

We have been trying to find where the critters get in for decades without success. The rules about possums are brought to you by the same folk trying to peddle the idea that single deck metros are preferable to double deck suburban carriages and that the Sydney to Parramatta rail line will be built.
