I liked this part of it...
That must be an Aussie thing. My husband could be completely paralytic drunk and there's no way in hell he'd ever pick up a snake...
"We see two sorts of snake bites over summer -- one's the drunk male who picks up the snake, and then there's the true accidental ones," he said.

LOL . . . I agree . . . and I don't even think its dependant on your nationality . . . You would want to be unconsciously drunk to do something like that . . . and if you're unconscious, then you probably can't do it!!

Anyway, at our fire brigade meeting last night we were told that there were an unusually large number of snakes active in the bush around where we operate this year.
I saw a big dugite at a controlled burn a few weeks ago.

Neither of us had time to avoid the other, and it looked mighty pissed off as my wheels bumped over it.
Not a day I'll forget in a hurry!

We had a brown on the job yesterday, curled up in a shower base, one of the labourers shoveled it into a dustbin and let it go down the bushland.

I found a 6' length of shed skin under the house at the weekend I knew there was a reason I don't use the laundry

I was called out the other week to a workshop, one guy was on the roof of the staff toilet building trying to keep an eye on a baby dugite, the other guys were hiding.
The snake got away but they still gave me $50
Talking of fire brigade, we had to do our fire warden training today and some of the stuff this fireman was telling us really made me think about our own safety. I am going to organise those RCD thingies for my house.
Do you do volunteer firefighting Renth?

Wet years will see a lot more snakes in eastern AUS. Basically, longer grass, an abundance of frogs which are all breeding up, etc.
Walking through long grass should be avoided, or if you do, always watch where you are stepping.
The Herald Sun loves running these sort of stories, it is more of a light weight magazine format than the Age or Australian which tend to run with less sensationalist or barely newsworthy stories.

I live in suburbia and we had a warning over the PA at school today as dugites have been spotted in our local park.
