Offshore electrician moving to Oz
Hi everyone. I’m not sure if this is the correct place to post this but just wondering what extra courses/qualifications are required for working as an electrician offshore in Oz.
We are looking into moving to Oz in the next couple of years and wondering if anyone has any experience of getting Work offshore as an electrician.
We are planning to be based in And around the Perth area. Thanks in advance

The first thing is to check you are eligible for a visa.
What qualifications have you got. What experience have you got. Are there any medical or character issues?

Have a look at the Skilled 189 Visa on the government website
https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/trav/visa-1/189-
If you have done a fully indentured Apprenticeship, have BTEC/HND or similar and four years experience after completion of your training then you may be able to apply after a successful skills assessment. Once you have a visa you may need to undergo some gap training before you can apply for a license to work in Australia as a sparky.
Not sure what you mean 'work off-shore' so I assume you just mean in generally in Australia.

Re: Offshore electrician moving to Oz
Hi. Thanks for the replies. We have checked our eligibility and we do qualify (with enough points) to move to Australia.
Sorry yeah it’s oil and gas on an oil rig. My husband is a fully qualified electrician and has been for 16 years and has worked on an oil rig for 12 years as well as having commercial and domestic experience as well.
On our move to Australia, we would prefer that he still works on an oil rig so need to make sure there are jobs available (that he can apply for) and hopefully get Work.

Getting work offshore is difficult and extremely competitive.
Then factor in that on arrival in oz he wont be licensed. Once you make the move, he needs to become licensed. This varies a bit by state, but will include him working as a trade assistant for a while, usually about a year (a bit like being an apprentice) and then doing some college courses.
Lastly, don't assume online assessments for visas are correct. They don't take account of many things such as the intricacies of skills assessments.
