Default Officially Homeless

Well thats it now. The house has gone and we are living with my sister. We are due to fly on Wednesday,Stopping off at Singapore for a night then arriving in Brisbane on Friday 11th June. We are really exited but also very emotional as well. :scared: . :scared: '; can't wait to arrive now though, just not looking forward to the goodbyes.

Need to also re-asses our luggage, we have got far too much, we are going on a 4 year temp visa and were told we could have 40kg each, until we booked the tickets and were told on a temp visa we could only have 30kg. had a big argument but they would not back down.

We are going on a 4 yr temp visa too.....I raised this with Singapore Airlines and they said it was still 40kg...so now I'm worried!...don't want to get to the airport and have to pay extra...will ring them again.

Good luck...we're also heading for Brisbane ...
and I feel :scared: but excited too.....hate tears so not looking forward to the goodbyes.

I think most airlines look for the "permanent" visa word.
Only with this do you get the extra or double baggage allowance.
What weight that represents varies between airlines.

However be wary of the phonecall promise. Others have arrived at the airport only to be disappointed and charged with excess baggage. try to get it confirmed in writing.

Steph, good luck to you and yours - look forward to hearing from you from the other side or down under should I say

Right since this thread have been worried about the allowance so we emailed singapore airlines to ask them if we were allowed 40kgs on a 4 yr visa......this is their reply:

> Dear Mr Desmond,
> We do give 40kgs baggage allowance to passengers who are emigrating to
> Australia provided they can produce a migrant visa at check-in stating
> that they can remain in Australia indefinitely.. This double allowance
> does not apply to any other types of visas. However, we do normally give
> an extra 8kgs on top of the 20kgs allowance for checked baggage bringing
> the total to 28kgs. You are also allowed one piece of hand luggage up to
> 7kgs.
> Regards/Singapore Airlines

So started looking at all the stuff we need to take and decided to try again:

Thank you for your email but I think I had better explain our position. We
> are emigrating to Australia for a minimum of four years after which we
will
> then gain permanent residency. How can you not grant us the 40kg allowance
> in this instance? You say that we have only the 28kg allowance this is
fine
> if we were going on holiday but we are emigrating.
> Also my wife spoke to a Singapore Airlines representative four weeks ago
to
> enquire about our baggage allowance and the rep said that it would be fine
> for us to turn up on the day and that we would get a 40kg allowance
because
> of our four year visa as a result of this we did not ship as many clothes
> onto the shipping agent as we could have. If we now have to pay for
> additional weight then your rep has misled us and incurred additional
> expense for us.
> Please also take into account that we have bought a one way ticket which
> has cost practically the same as a return fare.
> If this cannot be resolved with you then please provide me with details of
> how I can lodge a formal complaint.
> Regards
> N.C.Desmond

This was the reply:

Dear Ms Desmond

Thank you for your email. An extra 20kgs has been granted so your total
baggage allowance each is 40kgs. You are also entitled to 1 main piece of
hand luggage at 7kgs.

Yours Sincerely

Kelly
Singapore Airlines
London UK

I will take a copy of this email with us to the airport jic!

The moral of the story.....if at first you don't succeed try try again!!!
