I found this article interesting especially when considering people's experiences on this forum.

Used to be.

But less so now. It's harder to get into NZ than 10 years ago, the wait for NZ citizenship is longer and NZ citizens don't get automatic PR rights in Australia now.

I must say that I felt that NZ wasn't really the easy way into Aus but I assume that the figures are showing a trend which is now partly reversed. Still, I have family in NZ and they all say that anyone that wants to make any money has to leave to go to Aus. Also friends of ours that have migrated there can't see themselves staying permanently and see themselves moving to Aus within the next 10 years.

I agree with JAJ in that since 2001 both Australia and New Zealand have moved to plug this loop hole. In 2001 Australia removed automatic PR and rights to claim benifits from New Zelanders and in 2005 New Zealand increased the residence time for citizenship from 3 to 5 years (well, 6 if you count processing time!) in addition to other tigthnening of residence requirements making the transit thing much less attractive.

The article is also potentially missleading in that some of the foreign born NewZealanders could have been resident in NZ for 10, 20 or even 30 years so could hardly be described as being in transit.

In another similar news item today, according to Access Economics (Canberra) in its latest quarterly Business Outlook, one in ten people living in New Zealand is looking to emigrate to Australia within the next 12 months.

Astounding! That's 400,000 people!

I'm not surprised with this. Australia is a 1st world country and NZ is doing it's best to turn itself into a 3rd world country. Economic realities will always drive people to go where they will be better off.
