Default Nuisance phone calls...

Ever since we arrived in Melbourne and got a Telstra phone number we've had loads of nuisance phone calls trying to sell us things. Anyway, found a site where you can register to have a block on any of these companies phoning you. If anyone's interested then go to http://www.adma.com.au/asp/index.asp?pgid=1999
and register your phone number.
Hope this is helpful to someone...

I would be interested in your success. The site is run by these creeps themselves, I see - so it's possible that your number will be more accessible if you tell them what it is. Cynical, but I have got that way in Oz!

The government is - again - looking into making it an offence to make "direct marketing" calls if you register on a government site.

Pales into insignificance when the number Telstra gaives you is one digit away from the Moss Vale pizza house - it's astounding the number of Australians who misdial in exactly the same way.........

I always had a silent number back home.

It is well worth the extra few dollars per month.

We started off silent, but we wanted Caller Display and I think you have to be listed for that...?

We went on the "do not call" register when it started in the States, and there was a dramatic reduction in cold calls: why every country doesn't have it I will never know. (Well, of course, it's the marketing lobby - we all know that).

The worst thing was the number of two minute taped cold calls - the answering machine would be clogged with them.

We've been on the 'do not call' register for quite a few years and it does make a difference. Takes a couple of months for the information to filter down to all the companies that use it - but within about 2 months the calls basically stopped altogether.

Recently we have started to get a few more calls - all from India. I suspect that there's some loophole that means companies can use off-shore Call Centres and not have to comply with the regulations? Anyway I never stay on the line for long enough to find out who they are or what they're trying to sell me. As soon as I get that tell-tale few seconds of silence after picking up the call, I hang up.

They need to introduce into this country the Telephone and Fax Preference Service which they have in the UK as a matter or urgency!!!!!

We were bombarded with nuisance faxes (many in the middle of the night) in the UK many moons ago and once registering with the FPS they literally stopped overnight.

I can't believe the Ozzies have been sooooo slow in putting a stop to this nuisance behaviour!!!!!

Theres a cheaper way. We think weve been banned from indian call centres number list .

It was up to 4 times a day, nothing would stop them, then the 12 year old who does brilliant impersonations of anyone ( like all the little britain voices ) kept getting on the phone announcing he had tourettes syndrome then having a really bad outburst relating to their conversation For some reason weve not heard from them since.

We were slightly more polite (only slightly!) - basically told them to bugger off in no uncertain terms and take our names of any lists they may have.
Only had to shout this down the phone and hang up abruptly a couple of times before they gave up.

Either that or answer your phone as "Busty Brenda's Massage Services".... Bit difficult to explain away when your granny rings up though!

I am registered with adma and have noticed a reduction in the calls except the occasional "Bob from Bombay" call, its costs nothing to register and will reduce the number of calls.
