Default not paying taxes owed when returning home?

hello,

my fellow expat at work is returning back to england to live shortly and was telling me that he was going to not pay any tax that he owes before leaving - he's self employed (ABN).

I've tried telling him that surely he will get caught and there would be some sort of reciprical agreement between UK and Oz to avoid people doing just this when they leave but he is adament that he could get away with it.

Could he do this and what would the consequences be if he got caught?

Thanks

Who knows what will happen, but..........

The Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of Australia,
Desiring to provide, on the basis of reciprocity, for the recognition and enforcement of judgments in civil and commercial matters;
Have agreed as follows: ..blah blah.. etc

www.opsi.gov.uk/SI/si1994/Uksi_19941901_en_2.htm
The above link basically says that a court order (Civil and Commercial Matters) made in either country, can be enforced in the other country.
I can't understand why some people seem proud to rip off other tax payers.

is it worth it for him? Leaving the moral side out of it, what if he decides he wants to return or needs something from the UK tax that needs back referencing with aus?The consequences can be far reaching. better and easier to pay in my opinion, at least you have no worries that way.We paid our aussie tax when we returned to UK and were very surprised to get a rebate,your friend might even miss out on something like this?
