No claims Car Insurance
When we get car insurance in Oz, can we transfer our UK no-claims or do we have to start from scratch?

You can use your old no-claims.You have to get proof of no claims from the insurance company.
This is where having a local firm has proved handy for us,as we want to use our insurance to drive a borrowed car right up to the day we leave. They'll then give us proof at the office, rather than post it to us,as they won't give proof until we hand our old certificate back.
BB-hold on, a serious answer ?

Hi there
Make sure the no claims discount letter you get from your UK insurance company is detailed. OZ insurance companies only seem to acknowlage your no cliams bonus on the amount of years you have had that type of policy. For example if you had 2 years no claims on third party fire and theft and 3 years no claims on fully comp, they will only recognise the 3 years fully comp and give you 3 years no claims discount and not 5 years discount as they would in UK.
Also if you have changed insurance companies in the past it may be worth your while asking them to provide you with any info they have on your past policies.
It is also worth bearing in mind that you may be charged more if you intend driving on your UK licence for the first 3 months (they charged us $100 extra)So you are better off taking the theory test as soon as poss(its easy) you can do a mock test on the net at www.RTA.com.au.
Hope this helps
