Newman WA
Hi all,
Do any of you know anything about the town of Newman in WA?
My son has been offered work there and I've googled it but any first hand knowledge would be helpful.
Thanks,
Julie. x

Re: Newman WA
Very remote & hot. Lots of work going there, rentals very expensive erm I wouldn't live there, very happy to be quite a few hours away from the place. Bit of a dump with little in the way of things to do there IMO.

Hi
According to my daughter whose husband has colleagues up there it is just a small mining town. Not very much going on, and you need to make your own entertainment with other people there. Bit of a small town mentality and very hot in summer apparently. But I understand salaries are quite high to compensate. Make sure he gets offered accommodation as a lot of property is rented by companies for their employees and so rents are quite high.

If I was a single bloke out to make a bit of cash and see a spectacular part of WA in my time off I would have no hesitation moving to Newman. Make sure it is a good deal as like most mining towns rents and cost of living is high. There will be lots of young men (and women) up there to have a good time whilst earning some cash.

Is it a full-time job based in Newman? Most of the mines up there work on a roster (2 weeks on, 2 weeks off, or something similar) on a fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) basis, so they are accommodated in Newman when on roster and can live just about anywhere in Australia when off roster. My nephew was working in Telfer and living on the Gold Coast!

Re: Newman WA
He's only been back in Australia for 2 weeks now and has decided to take time out from his regular career that he had here in the UK. He's been offered bar work. The money is really good and he'll get accommodation thrown in. The idea is to try and make some contacts to get work in the mines eventually. He's a really hard worker - but obviously the heat may be a stumbling block
Only time will tell
I must admit I envy him. He is lucky enough to be able to travel anywhere he wants with no ties. If Newman doesn't suit him then off he trots to another place

At 21 I'd go for it? What has he got to loose?
Sure its the Wild West, and will be hot (but dry so tolerable IMO), but what and adventure, he should negotiate good time off if he's based there as opposed to FIFO though.
As NB says, some spectacular country not far from there if he has a 4WD.
