Question Newish to Sydney

Hi,

I'm fairly new to Sydney, moved here from Hampshire about 4 months ago. Not been out much, and barely know a soul here in Sydney, even after all this time.

Are there any meet-ups going on soon? I can't see any on the forum, but that doesn't mean anything

would love to hear from just about anyone at this stage

oh, a little about me - female, age 32, live in Rhodes, work in Macquarie Park

Hope I've posted in the right place...

Loads of Sydney folks about and I recall there is a fairly regular meet-up. And yes, this is the right place to post.

Hi,
We have been here a bit longer, from Berks, OH works at Maquarie Park but live in the opposite direction off the Mona Vale Rd.

There have been meet ups at the weekend, but not for a bit. The other meet up is not going to be convient for you (I assume you work FT) as it is on First Tues aimed at Mums. Keep an eye on the meet up sub forum and the diary.

We have found those that we socialise with are either from this site or we have meet through our child. OH work collegues live in a varied wide area that we just have not socialised with any of them so far.

Hi, welcome to Sydney and the forum.
There is usually a meet up happening at some point, have you looked in the Meet Up forum?
I notice there is a ladies get together on Tuesdays in the northern suburbs. May or may not be right for you, but you could try dropping in to that thread and asking. Failing that you could suggest a drinks get together on a new thread and see what response you get. Don't despair if it doesn't work out first time it won't be personal.
Good luck in settling in.

I did have a quick nose around the Meet-up forum, and will keep looking thanks. Maybe as you say - post my own suggestion soon. Sadly because I work full time I couldn't make a meet-up during the day... but there will be other occasions I'm sure.

I do work FT, and my colleagues also live in different directions from the office, which is not so convenient for socialising. I don't mind so much because I see them everyday.

What's hard is I've been here about 4 months now and after work I don't speak to another person until I am back at work the next day. Odd phonecalls from home and chatting with shop assistants notwithstanding...

But now I've found BE and things are looking up already

Thanks everyone

Welcome to Sydney Rai,

Similarly to your situation, we have been here 5 months - also from the south of england - B'mth, and have found it pretty difficult meeting folks.

I work in the city, and have also found that once people have worked their long hours, they scatter in various directions which in some cases involves a lengthy commute home. This tends to get in the way of a couple of quick beverages after work!!

Fortunately for me, my wife has started meeting people at various playgroups she takes our toddler to, and is currently my source of contacts out of work.

About two months ago, there was a meet-up at Balmoral Beach, near Mosman, which was a great day out and nice catching up with so many people in the same 'newbie' situation.

Would be great if your thread entices someone to arrange another meet in the near future. (Hopefully there will be someone who reads this, that will arrange one). Would love to do so myself, but am hopelessly unorganised and would fail miserably!! Yes I know it's a cop out.

There was a thread earlier this month re a Sydney girls night out - here is the link - http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...ht=girls+night Maybe worth looking out for a future session.

Where in Hants are you from?

Hi All,

We are also headed to Sydney by hopefully Oct/Nov time.
I know we would definitely need a drink and a good chat with other that can too relate to the stress of emigration.

So please Pm me your details nearer the time... and maybe we can all meet up at our house for a barbie lol

Going to another country and make new friends from scratch is hard, but at least this forum is abit of a lifeline.

Not at all... I was thinking about posting something myself, although I too am rather disorganised, I am committed to the cause

For sure, a or it is!!

And yeah, it's way harder than I thought to make new friends. I'm so glad that I've found this forum, I was starting to feel pretty depressed and lonely. Don't know why I didn't think of it before now... as now I feel all optimistic and tingly

Hi Rai

OOOO Me too (well that's where I was living before I came here anyway)!!! and I am in Sydney as well now.

I spend far too much time down in the Rhodes area as my daughter dives at Homebush 4 times a week. Hubby works at Macquarie Park as well.

I would come to a meet up - I go to the daytime one as well (which you said you can't make) but I'm up for meeting at weekends too. Not so easy in the evenings with the kids.

Anyway, welcome to Sydney - it does get warmer - honest!

Take care

Rudi

Rudi - you've just made my day

I'm going to start a meetup post, probably tonight, when I get home, and hopefully something will get off the ground. Hope to see you soon

Hi Rai,

Did you start a meet up post? I've had a quick look but can't find it. I've been here a couple of weeks now, and am keen to meet some folk to hang out with.

Anybody else?
