Default Newbies: Are you a dreamer?

Newbies welcome. Before you start to read this board, please tell us: ARE YOU A DREAMER?

Post your idea of what Aust/NZ is going to be like, and let us tell you where you're going wrong (or right)....

What is this mythical land to which you wish to emigrate?

For those who've been here a little longer....

Has anything on this board shattered your idea of what life in Aus/Nz is like? What has surprised you?

Has it turned everything upside down and convinced you not to emigrate?

honestly?
the only thing that surprised me was the cost of housing - to buy I mean. For some reason I imagined that we would be able to buy a nice 3/4 bed house for a similar price to here (£60-£80k) but going on the prices everyone on here talks about we dont stand a cat in hellls chance!!
other than that I have found the forum extremely helpful in finding out the little things eg that there is no oz equiv to council tax unless you buy your property; that you can buy bug bombs that neutralise the 8/6 legged beasties etc...

No really big suprise's for us as yet we'll have to see how it goes when we get there.I agree with Sue about the housing though.
Where would we be without dreams, same town ,same country, same shit.Variety is the spice of life or so they say

I guess we all dream the same thing that we will be happy, if you dont have a dream to aim for then you must be living one fantastic life

We still to go frequently get a slagging from those who have gone before and branded dreamers, if we werent dreaming of a better life we wouldnt be going, surely nobody goes with the intention of having a less happy existence.

This forum has been very useful and entertaining at times too, many positive and negative things have been taken from it, but at the end of the day these are other peoples perseptions and you have to make your own mind up, not accept someone elses take on it.

Did any of you have the idea that Aus/NZ would be a utopia? eg No crime, no drugs, perfect weather etc etc etc

On another thread someone said they knew people who thought like this.

Is anybody brave enough to admit they thought like this before visiting this forum?

I'm curious how people form these ideas that Aust/NZ are some kind of perfect lands....

Genuine question.... I'm not trying belittle anyone's views! I'm just curious

I dont think you are trying to belittle anyones anything, no i didnt think that australia was untouched by any of lifes nasties, but then i have travelled a lot, seen a lot of things and learned a lot from that, some people who are going to aus have never left the confines of the british isles or its neighbouring lands and their only knowledge of all things australian comes form either television or tales from people who may have visited australia in the 60's, if people honestly believe that these and many other problems dont exist in australia then they must also believe that there are no people living there either.

Australia is a multicultural society, which in itself brings many problems, it is in comparison to the uk an isolated nation, this doesnt mean that it doesnt have problems it just means that most of it isnt reported outwith australian shores.

Interesting, as someone who lived anywhere in the 60's I have no first hand knowledge of what life was like.

Perhaps I'm just a product of my generation - so cynical about the world that I know there are no paradises.

That's very well put Lynn - I'd never thought of it like that before.

I guess it's the same for many of the changes we make - they're all (we hope) for the better - job, house, etc.

I agree with Lynn. Obviously we all go hoping for a better life. If we went out there with a negative frame of mind, then it isn't going to work because you are immediately putting obstacles in the way. However, it is good to know the down sides as well, which helps us all to keep our feet firmly on the ground!

I don't care if I dream a little of BBQ's, long hot summers and beaches!

We're still dreaming. Been here just over 2 months. Still chasing the perfect job. (Will hear by Wednesday this week!) Having a little flutter on the stock market (BIG insider tip).

Always do Lotto. Friday night we usually spend at our Ozzie mates house. We all buy Saturday Lotto and discuss what we will do when we win the next day. Have long conversations about hiring the penthouse at Burswood Casino and calling our mates and sending them up in limos, room service all night etc.

Dreaming is great and good fun. As long as you still have your feet in the real world.

Australia is not utopia. We'll let you know when we get our yacht!
