I can understand testing us adults, however what happens to your kids, how can they sit a test like this? or do they not have to?

The sample questions in the Herald Sun were very easy

I've just done the sample test and got 18/20 (show off!) and I live in the UK still so I don't think anyone should worry too much about this. And children will obviously pick up all this and lots more when they go to school, although I don't know if they will have to sit the test anyway.

Applicants for citizenship under a certain age (probably 16) will not need to sit the test.

True...

THe people that will be effected the most are refugees. The questions are 'easy' for a UK citizen, but for someone who arrives in Aust without English (refugee) it will be difficult. The test will be conducted completely in English , thus it will force migrants to learn the language.

If you look at this question, whilst the answer seems EASY for UK citizens, the words are quite technical for someone of a non english speaking background. I think the whole objective is to 'force' refugees into learning a basic level of English.

5. Australia's political system is a ...

Question #9 is a bit dodgy as it's not 100% clear who is Australia's Head of State. I agree that most people would consider it to be the Queen but there are arguments that suggest that the GG is also the Head of State. The current working (but not legal) solution seems to be that the GG is the Head of State unless the Queen is in town.

9. Who is Australia's head of state?

a. Prime Minister John Howard

b. Queen Elizabeth II

c. Governor General Michael Jeffery

d. Premier Steve Bracks
Maybe they should leave this one out until the constitutional lawyers can work it out.

This is a poorly drafted question. Both a. and b. are true.

I got confused by the question on how many states there are. I didn't realise that two are considered territories not states, woops.

As is this question

15. Australia's values are based on the ...

a. Teachings of the Koran

b. The Judaeo-Christian tradition

c. Catholicism

d. Secularism

I could be wrong, but b and d could be reasonable answers to give (answer given as b)

Don't worry. The UK Trivial Pursuits game gets this question wrong as well.
