Negotiating with shippers
We've shortlisted 3 shipping companies and now want to negotiate with them to get the best possible price. We'd appreciate any advice on how any of you played shipping companies against each other. Did you ask for freebies, lower insurance rates, etc. ?
Thanks in advance,

Its not just about best possible price is it? A combination of both price and service surely? There is a poll on here for Good/Bad shippers.

This goes for any salesman really -
Decide who you really want to use, phone 'em up explain that they're your number one choice but that they're more expensive than X.
Usually they'll meet somewhere in the middle, and if you're happy with this go ahead. If they won't budge just walk away, it's amazing how often this focus' the salesmans mind.
Be polite and good humoured but remain firm, if you're too aggressive you'll just p*ss the guy off and he'll dig his heals in.
Our shippers played around with the whole package, insurance and shipping costs and were able to get within a few pounds of there nearest rivals quote.
I've found in the past that salesman know when you're playing them off against each other, I believe it's called a Dutch auction, and will withdraw rather than be held over a barrel.
Good luck.
