Default Negotiating with shippers

We've shortlisted 3 shipping companies and now want to negotiate with them to get the best possible price. We'd appreciate any advice on how any of you played shipping companies against each other. Did you ask for freebies, lower insurance rates, etc. ?

Thanks in advance,
NewJerseyToOz

Went for PSS. No negotiations. Price was good and took the basic of basic for insurance.

Its not just about best possible price is it? A combination of both price and service surely? There is a poll on here for Good/Bad shippers.

True, price is just one criterion. We're researching quality of service for the shortlisted companies as well right now. The poll results are handy, thanks.

This goes for any salesman really -

Decide who you really want to use, phone 'em up explain that they're your number one choice but that they're more expensive than X.
Usually they'll meet somewhere in the middle, and if you're happy with this go ahead. If they won't budge just walk away, it's amazing how often this focus' the salesmans mind.
Be polite and good humoured but remain firm, if you're too aggressive you'll just p*ss the guy off and he'll dig his heals in.

Our shippers played around with the whole package, insurance and shipping costs and were able to get within a few pounds of there nearest rivals quote.
I've found in the past that salesman know when you're playing them off against each other, I believe it's called a Dutch auction, and will withdraw rather than be held over a barrel.

Good luck.

If you are in NJ, USA, try http://www.discount-shipping.net/ They have a warehouse in Newark/Baltimore that they will accept shipping in from. I plan to use them in October as their prices seem really good. They told me over the phone it would take three weeks for our boxes to reach Sydney. All the prices are also listed on the website. Just add US$35 for documentation per shipment.
