We also got a dog which was a god send really as I got to meet a few people out walking. We bought a house as soon as we arrived so I spent a lot of time getting that sorted and I spent a lot of time on here! It wasn't easy, there were a few tears on lonely evenings, but looking back now it was worth it. Its up to you to get yourself out there. Join the gym, if you're working, that really helps. Just enjoy, be prepared for tears and tantrums but I have no regrets at all.
Thanks so much for your reply! That's exactly how mines works and I know that it's probably going to be hard, although he is desperate for the move and i think he would do it tomorrow if he could. But its nice to know you were in a very similar situation and you managed just fine. Although I'm not a dog person, we have 2 cats.....would people think it would be weird if i walked my cats? Haha

You may have more difficulty finding work on a temporary resident visa (457) than if you are able to swing a permanent one. I dont know about Perth but in many other places, people on temporary visas are ranked lower than citizens or permanent residents even if you are perfectly capable of doing the job. You may have to start out with some voluntary work or something like that to get "known" somewhere or be prepared to take serial short term jobs.

Better make it Mandarin in that case. You need the challenge!

That's a point, but if you're happy to stay with receptionist-type work, you could probably pick up some temping - no idea what Perth specifically is like for that though - I've only worked in Melbourne.

I would be happy with anything I could get my hands on to be honest. Although my fiance has told me I dont have to work, for my own sanity I would have to. Even if its just a few hours a day. It would get me out and about and also would get me meeting people!
