Hi, we are moving to Wollongong (hopefully!) at the end of this year. Would it be prudent to purchase new white goods prior to shipping all our furniture as I understand these things are much more expensive down under! Your help please??!!

The thing you need to take into consideration, is that not all the brands are the same here as over there, what will you do if your item breaks down and needs repair??

Hi we are moving to Sydney in 3 weeks and just bought a front loading washing machine and a dishwasher new to go in our container. We checked those sites and they are far more expensive in Oz. We got a great deal here. I know there is the chance that you might have to pay duty/customs fees but according to many on here that is not very likely. They are more interested in if you have 10 washing machines, 20 toasters etc but don't mind too much if it is personal. They do ask you to declare any goods less than 12 months old so the possibility is there but it is small. (I HOPE!!!!!)
Does anyone know what is the duty percentage of their estimated value if they do make you pay?
We also bought some new bed sheets and a few other things.

We dont think that our washing machine will survive and thought the same i.e. buying new (with shipping bolts left in!) BUT it is something that we will need quite soon after finding a rental so will now buy when we get to Australia and give the old one away.

Not sure where you are headed, but you might be able to hire a washing machine when you first get here while yours is being shipped. We used a furniture rental company for our first 2 years here before we started buying furniture.

Good idea, that or a 2nd hand one for a bit. We will be traveling around for 3 weeks so will have a load of washing but we are used to using launderette from our time traveling before. Got 2 kids now though

Will double check the prices as we now have space for a new one after getting rid of a load of stuff.

Thats what we looked at too (renting a machine) and they are very cheap to rent for a few weeks also some house rentals have washing machines included, so if you are renting for a few months till you buy that would be an option too.

You will really save a packet. The same one we bought here would cost €480 more to buy in Oz. Another one we looked at was €650 more expensive in Oz.

We are going to Queensland and they are not doing it anymore NSW and SA are still giving A$200 cashback on washing machines that are 5* rated.

Going to look into buying here. Lets hope it works when used over there

we bought a stainless steel double door fridge freezer from ebay for $400 and a washing machine that works perfectly well, for 70!

we were chuffed....we had the funds to buy new, but thought we'd save the money instead!

i have seen near new fridges go for less than half new, because it won't fit in the fridge space of their new house,so you can always pick up a bargain!
