my wife and I have been applying for jobs in Sydney and wondered where is a nice ,safe area to stay? Obviously it's not cheap to stay in Sydney so any advice from you guys would be greatly appreciated

Sydney is very big and commutes can take a long time. Probably would be more useful if you tell people whereabouts in Sydney the jobs are that you are applying for and take it from there. But in general terms, Lower and Upper Nth Shore, Nth Beaches (north of Dee Why) and some Eastern suburbs can all be good.

What do you mean by stay? Stay for a short while or stay to live?
There are loads of nice safe places to stay, it all depends on where you will end up working and then your family needs and wants (kids? schools? leisure? commute?).
I would resolve the jobs first, then take care of location if you mean stay to live, but if you mean stay for a short while during a job search/interviews then go for a serviced apartment adn there are loads of them in loads of suburbs.

depends on your budget aswell. Generally places close to the city like pyrmont/ultimo/surry hills and like a previous post mentioned, up in north sydney or towards the eastern suburbs. The flipslide is that these areas will cost you more than other more affordable areas.

Do you have visas sorted out?

So I'm assuming you are looking at a 457 Temp Visa. This will take a few months to get sorted but by all means start looking now. But, do NOT under any circumstances give notice in your current job until the position has been approved by DIAC, your Visa has been approved by DIAC and a firm concrete job offer has been contracted.
They do a lot of fishing over here, HR and Recruiters that is, so until everything is firmed up take all verbal/telephone promises with a pinch of salt.
For where to live, it depends on your type of demographic and how much you want to commute as well as what sort of lifestyle you want to have outside of work. Family, kids?

Yes I have a wife and young baby. Obviously the main thing will be safety and a nive area that is safe to go out about at night. We were in Manly about 6 years ago and loved it there but no idea what it's like to live etc. All suggestions greatly recieved,thanks again

Wow, what have you heard about Sydney that makes you think it has so many dangerous and unsafe places to live?? It is like ANY city in the western world, it has great places and some not so great places.
I lived in Manly for 2 years when we first came here with our then 3 yr old son. It is a lovely place to live and great family lifestyle...pre 9pm, after that the idiots come out but families are usually tucked away by then.
Honestly, there are lots of nice places to live, it really will depend on what you want to do at weekends, whether or not you will commute by car or public transport, what sort of neighbours you are comfortable with.
Don't panic, get the job and move confirmed first then arrange for a short term serviced apartment for when you get here. Then have a look around yourselves in the evenings and at weekends and then you will be able to view your own suburbs with your own perspective.

Surry Hills or Paddington would get my vote. Easy access to parks etc for your wife and baby (I used to be in the same boat and loved the area). There's loads to do, lots of great places to eat/ drink and you can be on the beach in 15 minutes.

You make it sound like afghanistan! Safe to go out at night would cover many areas in Sydney. You really need to narrow this down a bit more yourself as there are just too many options and you might as well just pick from a map.

hi friend, Australia is a cheap and safe country. there is not dangerous place in Australia. So you can stay in any city in Australia. But it You want more facilities you can stay in Sydney.

The OP isn't asking about ANY city in the western world, they are asking about Sydney. I don't get some of the responses here, they are either written by those in denial, or written by those that have never ventured further west than Parramatta or only been in Sydney for a couple of years or less. Undoubtedly, there are some very unsafe places in Sydney and to deny otherwise is simply ludicrous.

However, there are a few assumptions regarding the OP that it would not be unreasonable to make. Most sponsored folks seem to fall into the finance/tech/engineering categories (nursing and teachers excepted) and in Sydney, unless the company has a specific outlier of a location, that's going to mean eastern, city or the telco gutter of Nth Syd, Chatswood, Nth Ryde (and maybe NorWest). Anywhere in spitting distance of those locales is going to be fine, and in IMO a large % of those coming out will end up working in on of those places. So in that regard, yes, Sydney is safe.

But it's an awfully big city. Mrs TB was violently mugged (before I knew her) in one the western suburbs, I had a friend who was car jacked in Smithfield. Ironically all the crime that has ever happened to me ( burgled twice, stolen car, stolen motorbike and beaten up by some drunk lads when i was walking home from a friend's house) have al happened either on the lower nth shore or nthn beaches. But I put that down to being a statistical anomaly in the grand scheme of things.

However with regards to Manly, tbh that's one of the last places I'd feel safe at night on a general basis, especially on the weekend after 10pm, there is just too much rampant drinking there for my liking. Anywhere north of Dee Why however is like another world and extremely safe.

I've rambled a bit, but what I wanted to say was that no, Sydney is far from a 'safe' city and there are some very bad parts. However, in most cases and most situations, those suburbs and situations are very easy to avoid as the demarkation between 'good and bad' places is much more pronounced than say the large cities of the UK.

Everything is relative depending on where you come from, but this statement is absolute BS.
