Nice one Sally, Good to hear from someone else who's made the same decision as I think we're about to make.

What was about Perth that made you decide to leave after only 2 weeks?

Cheers AB

Hi,

We did exact same in January this year. All our reccies to Perth had been winter trips, and migrating to Perth bang in mid summer came as a nasty shock, yellow, dried out, sandy, bush-fires, horse-owners evacuating their horses to escape. After 2 weeks in Perth hubby caught a plane to Sydney and backpacked up the coast as far north as Noosa (Sunshine Coast). He decided on Gold Coast as a place that was green and lush looking, and had enough going on to keep the kids occupied now and to give them some sort of work prospects when they leave school . Kids and I followed on later and we all met up on the Gold Coast just north of border to NSW. Since then we've done quite a lot of travelling around on the east coast.

Sunshine Coast is very beautiful, and much of it offers a gentle lifestyle with unspoilt scenery, but many locals say the Sunshine Coast is only 15 years behind the Gold Coast in terms of over-development, and is already working on catch-up in terms of the traffic. The Sydney "baby-boomers" are retiring to South East Queensland in their droves and the whole area is becoming extremely busy.

Driving is really scary here compared to Perth, schooling is more laid back here (too laid back for kids to learn anything I think), water supply is a problem here (I heard that Perth was planning a new desalination plant), climate is warmer here in winter, but very sticky, sweaty and humid in summer.

Regarding the isolation factor, Perth is undeniably out on a limb, flights from Perth to Sydney/Melbourne do cost around $500 more than Brisbane to Sydney/Mel. But Perth does have a strong community feel about it, which for many the feeling of belonging to that community makes the isolation more bearable.

For some of us it's so difficult to find the right place to settle in Aus, it seems like every place will have one or two things about it that are good for you, but several things about it that are bad for you, and the distances between those places make it impossible for you to live somewhere in the middle.

Y.

Re: Moving from Perth to Brisbane!

This is a very interesting thread for me. We were looking at Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth as well. We were set for Brisbane at one point, but I think it will end up being Perth. It's really great reading everyones experiences as we haven't been to any of the three places. One concern I had about Brisbane, the gold coast actually, was that it's so full of tourists. I think that might feel very transient, as everything is set up for people on vacation. I am also concerned about Perth being so isolated ( that's my only concern). I'm from Canada so I had a little chuckle at the "cold" winter" comment, try 35 below my friend, now that is chilly!!!!! I guess if it's not the right place we can always move, but our kids are 9,7 and 5 and my oldest is sad enough at moving across the world, the less change after we go the better. We do have some family in Perth and I'm hoping that might make us feel a bit more at home. I guess we'll have to see.

Choosing Brisbane over Perth for easier access to Sydney, is like moving from Paris to London to gain easier access to Glasgow.

Must be a head cold.

YEH......................WHADEVER!!!!

I don't know what I've been thinking obviously a 4 hour (ish) flight to Sydney or Melbourne with 2 year old child is gonna be sooooooo much more enjoyable than 1-2 hour flight.....what a muppet!

As I've said there are many reasons for wanting try 'over east' the isolation factor is is just one of them, and your example is utterly rediculous...try:

Moving from Cairo to London to be gain easier access to Glasgow!!!

Too funny. The only thing they'd be isolated from on the east coast - is, ermm, Perth, which they've decided isn't for them. Don't take it as a personal insult when someone doesn't like the city you've chosen to make your home - doesn't make it a bad place, just not right for them.
