We are getting quotes for shipping stuff to Perth in Nov. but so far its very expensive. Anyone with advise on this score? Seems like it'll cost more than stuff worth, but don't want to start from scratch.

Are you getting quotes on a 20ft or a 40ft container?

It will depend on your stuff. If it is on its last legs then replace when you are here but if it is good stuff take it with you. Furniture is expensive in Australia unless you shop at Ikea (it is still expensive compared to UK) or somewhere like Fantastic Furniture. You can pick up homewares in the likes of target, big W or Kmart quite cheaply.

What quotes have you got?

they have quoted us £3500 for 750 cu ft. So we are now thinking to leave the Settees, beds & TV's & just buy them when we get there.

My advice would be to take everything with you. We ended up with a 40ft container and paid about £6000 if I am remembering right. We had a mixture of some expensive quality furniture and quite a lot of stuff from Ikea. We were so glad to have all our stuff with us and there are so many other things to spend your money on when you arrive its nice not to have to worry about replacing your wordly goods!!

We left all the big stuff behind and just shipped some boxes with cloths and personal items and then bought everything else here. As has been mentioned there are good deals on some things to be had.

Hi well we came with nothing and wish we had shipped somethings but then like others have said if its on its lasts then you can pick up some cheeper thing here then what it would cost to ship the older things and also we looked at it as a new start but hope you get things sorted as i know its not easy good luck

We have had quotes from Anglo Pacific & Pickfords - both around £3,600 for 750 cu ft. Any suggestions of other companies that may give better deal. We are now thinking of leaving out big furniture as quote shows £900 for 3 piece suite alone.

Bring everything! Really. I used Anglo Pacific 4 years ago and they were really good. £3,000 then for a shared container.

We had so much stuff, even after a massive clear out, that we ended up with a 40 foot container (not full though by any means) and it cost just under £10.000. It hasn't arrived yet - we've been here around 7 weeks so a few more weeks until it comes.

To be honest we wish we hadn't taken so much. Firstly this past couple of months has shown us that we don't need all the bits and pieces and the children certainly don't need all the toys - they haven't missed them one bit!

We bought stuff especially for shipping since we were taking the large container anyway and we wish we hadn't because, for example, we have had to buy a new iron and ironing board, mattresses, crockery, cutlery, quilts, pillows, bedding, towels, pans, glasses, chairs, lamps - the list is endless. I don't know what I was thinking really because I had bought all these things new in the UK but obviously we couldn't do without them for 10+ weeks here. I haven't bought a vacuum cleaner here because I have a new one coming, but it's a long time not to hoover the bedrooms!! Also have a new microwave coming but finding we are not missing having one.

We shipped our new-ish fridge freezer and washing machine, but of course we can't do without either here so have had to buy second hand ones to tide us over. Looking at the new prices I would say they are no dearer than the UK and I wish we had just bought here.

Thanks for good advice. We will be arriving end of January & will need to buy fridge freezer as ours is integrated here. We will look out for people like yourself who are selling on things like this.

We have decided to take some stuff with us, and buy the rest over there. It's just hard deciding what to leave off the list

We brought everything and were pleased we did! it was like christmas getting our stuff and opening up all the boxes. I would consider you bring some stuff with you for example buy a new Dyson (if you use one) they cost an absolute FORTUNE here! Any stuff that arrives that you find you actually don't want after all, just do a garage sale. I think it would be too expensive to buy everything new when you get here.

That is a perfectly good quote. You either book a container or you start again. If your furniture comrpises a couple of scruffy sofa beds and a dining table from ikea or argos that you bought when you left home for the first time then starting again might make sense.

If you are settled and have decent stuff now then bring it! You are not going to replace a household full of decent furniture for £3,600.
