Hi, I am also moving to Perth in March with my two teenage children. I had already excepted a job at Osborne Park Hospital so i thought i better go and visit Perth before i moved there. I had been researching the move since Feb and spent hours on the net looking at the cost of living, schools, property etc. I was very positive before i went and i can honestly say i was not disappointed. I found that Perth was clean, friendly, welcoming and better then i thought it would be. I know i was on holiday and it will be different when i live there and you will get much better advice from the people who have already moved but i loved it. The city area feels alive but not busy, i was surprised to find that it seems to close at 9pm. The surrounding suburbs are so easy to drive to that i did not get lost. The beaches are wonderful and most of them are quiet. The food is excellent, the shopping ok, but i am used to London. Nobody cares what you wear anyway, i found myself in a very nice restaurant in jeans and a jumper and felt comfortable, all of my party dresses stayed in the case. But the best thing about Perth were the people.
I met all types of people and they were open and helpful. I have loads of e mail addresses and offers of help from both Australians and British. I had lunch with some people from BE, dinner with some Australians who i met and when i was sitting in a bar a group of Australians asked if i wanted to come and join them. Now this does not happen where i live and i have traveled to many places in the world and these where some of the nicest people i have ever talked to.
From a parents point of view i feel this a very good place to bring up children, i only wish i had taken my children when they were younger. I talked to teenagers who could hold a conversation, saw groups of school children having surfing lessons during school time and when i asked the teenagers what they do after school they said "well we work of course". Your children sound just the right age to move with, i dont think it is going to be so easy with a couple of teenagers, who are used to having a big social life as Perth seems to be very laid back but it is the place i want them to mature in.
Now i know i could be seeing things through rose coloured glasses and Perth might not suit everyone but my instincts tell me that if you are a laid back but positive family who wants to live in a place that still has prospects then Perth is a good place to live and i cant wait

Hi Leigh, i traveled around Perth and looked at most of the suburbs but have still not decided where to live. I live in a sea side town in Essex so none of the areas looked bad to me! What i am going to do is look at the senior schools about twenty minutes away from where i will be working, study each suburb and house prices then make a short list. My hospital is near a main highway so it means i have a lot of suburbs to choose from and to be honest house prices are playing a big part in my final decision. From what i could gather it is the same as here if it is a cheaper suburb there is a reason. Maybe the school is not so good or there is local authority housing in that area. There are loads of nice suburbs that i could afford and some wonderful but expensive areas, way out of my price range. There is a lot of building going on all round Perth and loads of housing estates which all seem nice it depends how far out you want to live. My wish list is, not to far from work, children able to walk to school, public transport for them to use to get to beach/city, friendly area thats a short drive to the beach. I must say i am spoilt for choice thats why it is so hard to choose.
Yes the flies do get on your nerves but after a while i got used to it. You can PM if you want my e mail address or phone number

iam the same as you i live in lowestoft a old town which is going down hill fast so when i have been looking at houses they all look really good. My wish list as you put it would be close to schools easy to get to work and close to the beach as i do enjoy a bit of surfing (not been for a while to cold).house prices will also play a massive part in my final decision as i dont want to stretch my self to much in case of work going wrong or other things (you never know). I am in a bit of a hurry to kind of decide because i have sold my house and they want to move in 2-3 weeks,so going to put stuff in storage and i want a place i can say my stuff will be going to. you have said you have a job already are you finding thats making it easier to move. how exciting it is to chat to someone going through the same.
I dont know what pm stands for(sorry)
Thanks
