Its maybe just my perception...but I'm getting a hint of desperation here. Whilst its good to have a dream and to do all you can to make things work, you do have to be realistic. Use an agent, they will know all the rules and know how you can fit in. Whilst we can give advice and opinions they are not a replacement for qualified migration agents.

I've wondered about that from the start. I honestly can't see any way it can be done as I always thought the employer has to meet certain criteria in order to sponsor for a 457 - training requirements etc need to be met as well.

Yes, a self sponsored 457 is do-able, using a separate legal entity such as a limited company or a family trust with a corporate trustee.
The quality of the business plan, the credibility of the visa applicant, and the availability of capital to underpin the financial aspects of the business are some of the key factors.
In principle this is a strategy available to many who can't achieve a more mainstream visa, but it ought not be discounted.
