Default Moving to Logan qld

Hi there

We have lived in tassie for the last 6 years and are now relocating to brissie.

Looks highly likely that oh will get offered a job at Logan council so would like some info on nice suburbs near by.

We had thought he would work in cbd so I had only researched north Brisbane.

Ideally I would like a suburb where oh could bike/bus/train to work as we don't want to have 2 cars. I need a good school for my son who will start prep in 2013. We need to rent and I dont want to pay more than $400 a week if possible.

Also have heard some horrid things about Logan. I am sure there are some nice places though???!!!
Please help!!

Forget about the naysayers and enjoy the fact that you get more for your money in Logan compared to the 'posh' suburbs.

I lived for the first year in Oz in Loganlea (Waterford West) at my MIL's house which was OK actually, it was a bit set back from the main drag (Kingston Road) and apart from the occasional hoon it was a nice introduction to Oz and handy for transport.

I am guessing the Logan Council job is based around Logan Central, this area does have a bad rep and I would not focus there although there are some properties with more 'elbow room' around there if you look.

We are living in Logan but out in the sticks a bit (Logan Village) so public transport is zero and biking is a major undertaking. The local school is very nice though and the rural feel makes up for hassle, probably more to the liking of someone coming from Tassie? In short, to be out here you need two vehicles.

Not sure about the rental market, sorry.

That's as much as I've got, ignore the idiots who put Logan down, it's a big area and there are bargains to be had

Discussing Logan will give a chance for those people who say that this is a classless society to have a sneer.

I am working in Logan at the moment......there are certainly a lot of BIG people there

Schooling aside, I would have a look at Marsden if I were in your shoes. We've got relatives who live there. There are plenty of houses available for under $400 a week. All big blocks of land, 800m2 to 1000m2. It would be approx 15min bike ride to work for your OH.

In terms of schools, I don't know anything about the quality of the schools in that area. This website does give some info, but it indicates that both Marsden & Burrowes State schools perform substantially below the national average.

Hi

Check out Daisy Hill, Cornubia, Shailer Park....all really nice areas, no matter what some say on here, some areas are bad , some are good like all suburbs.

We have lived in Logan 10 years now so I can give my impression of the area. I would in all honesty avoid Kingston, Woodridge, Marsden, Loganless, Slacks Creek, Underwood to an extent, Crestmead and a few others. The 'better' side is Daisy Hill, Shailer Park, Cornubia.
LOL, I didnt see the post above but they really are the better areas.

Logan does have one of the worst reputations in Brisbane, some deserved, some not so, as it is a big area. Because of this stigma prices have traditionally been lower over all which means some cheaper than average houses can be had even in the better areas. Of course some people love living there even in the areas with the worse reputation because the people/place suits them and they get the advantage of lower prices.

I would say some of the advantages of the area would be nice hills, bike tracks and bushland around the Daisy Hill area, closer to the Gold Coast than most of Brisbane, large shopping mall, parks, bike tracks, very family orientated and multi-cultural areas and nice rural and acreage areas.

Some of the disadvantages might be some areas of Logan have high crime/some dodgy characters which might? spill out into surrounding areas, quite far from the city with parts having fairly poor CBD public transport if that is a requirement, quite far from a lot of the cultural events/venues/activities of Brisbane so might feel fairly cut off from this and a hospital with a bad reputation (not sure how deserved this is so just a heads up).

The parts of Logan that might more deserve the reputation do have some fairly challenging govt schools from what a teacher or two have told me so research a lot if you are going govt near these areas.

If your husband is working on/near the Beenleigh train line you could also consider living anywhere up and down this line which opens up the southern suburbs of Brisbane in the Brisbane City Council area and also further south towards the Gold Coast if you prefer.

When our son broke his arm at school a couple of years ago and the ambulance came to take him away I said I would follow and asked if they were going to Logan Hospital, the driver said 'Oh God no, we'll take him to Brisbane'
As it turned out he received less than good care anyway but I think it is a well deserved reputation LH has unfortunately.

Out of interest, where is small child likely to go when she gets to 13? Possibly the only real downside to small village?

Hey, don't age him that quickly.
That's a long way off.

He may even have a job by the time young-un is 13.

I've got one actually, today ... it's only ad-hoc IT support for a small business but it suits very nicely for now. Part time and it fits in with school hours, can't ask for more at the moment ...
