Cool Mornington Beaches (& near by)

Looking at Mornington and near by (Mt eliza, Martha, Safety).

Just wondering how used these beaches really are. Any activities going on. thought there no point living near a beach if no one uses it ?

The beaches are well used but they are not the only beaches around. Frankston, Seaford, Carrum, Bon Beach, Chelsea, Edithvale, Aspendale, Mordialloc, Parkdale, Black Rock, all have access to the beach and all are well used.

Going the other way Safety Beach, Dromana, McCrae, Rosebud, Rye and more further down all near the beach.

Lots of activities on the bay, wind surfing etc.

Diving is also popular on the Peninsula.

You also have the ocean beachs like Gunnamatta, which are great for surfing! Spent some of the summer holidays in Rye and alternated between Gunnamatta and trying to surf, and the bay beach at Tootgarook. Best of both worlds, especially when the tide was out on the bay beach! Lots of little sands islands appeared. The kids loved it!

Gunnamatta is a treacherous beach and many people have drowned there. Four children one year drowned in one day. Its only for very experienced surfers. Not for children at all in my opinion.

Have a look at the description ttp://www.slsa.asn.au/default.aspx?s=beachprofile&beachid=vic253

You will note it has 9 rips along the beach.

Also the Sewerage Outfall is at Gunnamatta and you need to keep well away from it.

Should have said we got to Gunnamatta on the weekends when the surf rescue are working, and we always keep between the flags. And certainly not had any problems as regards seeing sewage either on the beach or in the sea. I would say that most surf beaches are treacherous to a certain extent hence they have surf rescue.

Did you have problems when you were there?

Gunnamatta is certainly a beach where great care must be taken. I'm a swimming teacher and know it is impossible to say that any beach or water environment is safe, but if you educate your kids in water safety and follow the advice and rules of the lifeguards on duty you hopefully won't run into any serious problems. That said Gunnamatta isn't a beach for young families or inexperienced swimmers and those that do get into trouble are not only putting their own lives in danger but also the lives of other beach goers and the lifeguards.

The sewerage outfall goes quite a way out to sea and you would not see anything on the beach as the beach is patrolled all the time. There are signs telling you where it is and not to swim or fish near it.

Its unfortunate but we have drownings every year in the summer and as the previous poster said between the flags at all times.

Harold Holt was not far away from Gunnamatta when he went missing.

Thanks for the info.

I really wanted to know if there was anything for the kids to do. Activities or clubs to join. Rather than just beach walkers.

We have never tried surfing, but will give it a go.

Why is it on google earth, all the beaches and car parks seem rather empty. ?
