Mobiles....

Currently I'm with Vodafone as I have been since we arrived, and have pre-pay.
Winds me up though as credit runs out or expires but they dont tell you (in the UK I was on 1-2-1 and would get a text saying credit was low) - last week my credit ran out on the 24th and I had no idea until I tried to send a text, luckily I wasnt in a situation where I needed to phone someone urgently!
Anyway, I Bpayed $20 on friday but it's still not on my phone..... so I'm thinking about changing but havent a clue what's best.
How do I know which mobile company gets a good signal down here for starters, and then choose the best plan?
Wondered if anyone has any tips please

They use the Optus network so coverage is good.

Virgin Mobile do great rates, both pre and post pay. They do free calls between virgin mobiles too, which can make a huge difference. If you recharge $50 it has a 1 year expiry on it, so no worries there...

I did think that they told you with an automatic message when you try to use the phone, when you have under a certain amount of credit left.

I'm sure I used to get a text from Vodafone telling me I was due to recharge in about 2 days but the last couple of months I have not, so have to make a note of it myself when I recharge. (I've never run out of credit.)
If I'm at home I have to go into the bathroom to get a good signal, which is very odd as it's in the middle of the house with no windows.
The only reason I stick with it is that The Geek's corporate phone is Vodafone.

The only reason I stuck with them is that they are 10c cheaper per text to overseas (i.e. UK) numbers than the other major telcos. If they bring their txt charges in line with the others I would change.

I am on a vodafone pre pay too. Vodafone stopped sending the txt re. credit about 6 months ago. I called them to ask why as I lost about $20 credit, they could not give me an explanation or any credit back.

when your credit is about to expire send it to someone else, then get them to send it back and it recharges.

That's odd. I have Vodafone prepaid and am always being reminded that my credit is running low. I have the one that lasts 365 days, so expiry date is not such an issue, but always reminded about credit running low.

Hi Bridie - me and kids are all on Telstra pre paid. Set up on 1cent texts (to other telstra mobiles) There are other options but as we all text much more than talk is best for us. Not had a signal anywhere around here so far, even up your way
. And they send a text message when balance gets below $10 and again when below $1
