as long as it's dual band (only the real cheap ones aren't nowadays) and you've had it unlocked so it's not tied to your current service provider it will work but you'll need an adapter for the charger or an aussie charger due to different style plug sockets

No reason why it shouldn't but word of warning, my UK phone, which I got on contract with vodaphone here doesn't accept vodaphone SIM's in Oz, so will have to be unlocked - whilst my hub's O2 one did accept a vodaphone SIM. I thought mine would have accepted it, as same company - so get it unlocked before you go, just in case.

if Your phones from USA it probably wouldn't work in Aus unless it's either Tri band or preferably Quad band due to the different GSM bandwidth used in the States to most of the world.
Below is a list of countries and GSM bandwidth as an easy guide to see if your phone will work.

USA/Canada 1900 (primary)/850
Europe 900/1800
Middle East 900/1800
Africa 900/1800
Asia 900/1800
Australia/New Zealand 900/1800
Caribbean 850/900

NOTE (uk Phones) Vodaphone and O2 GSM 900, Orange and T-Mobile GSM 1800 (most phones now at least Dual bandcovering both 900 and 1800, Tri band phones operate on same as dual band plus GSM 1900 for USA Quad band operate on all 4 bandwidths)

Get your phone unlocked before you get here - you can usually find "a little man on the market" who will do it very cheaply for you.

Once you get here, if you want to use it for data downloads, emails etc you will need to get new settings from whichever provider you end up contracting with. The unlocking process just allows the sim card to work for regular services but all the other wired in stuff like screen savers and settings are still specific to the originating service. Not to worry though, your new provider can sms settings to you which are easily installed.

I have my old Sony mp3 player phone from the UK ... which should work. My wife has an american tri band Razor so that should work too .. just need to know if there are any places in OZ that do the unlocking like in the UK ??

I don't know of anywhere here in the US that does it so thought it may be easier to get them done in OZ ?

"Most" if not all US "GSM" phones will be a minimum of Tri Band. GSM was a late introduction into the US and the majority of phones in the US are CDMA and will not work.

A sim unlocked N95 will work here on all but Telstra NextG service (nor the old CDMA service).

BTW. Bandwidth and Band are different concepts
